Why are Hazrat Abbas's (pbuh) sacrifices so valuable?
Imam Khamenei:
Abbas Ibn Ali's value resides in his jihad, self-sacrifice, devotion and knowledge of Imam of his time. His significance is his patience and endurance, his refusal to drink water while dehydrated; standing over the river without any religious or customary prohibitions for ingesting water. The value of those martyred at Karbala resides in the reality that they safeguarded a just cause, in the most difficult conditions anyone could imagine. Some people are ready to fight in a great, lost war and perhaps perish in the heat of the battle, which is indeed a highly ranked position. Yet, not everyone is ready for such a sacrifice, since martyrs and those who fight on the path of God are numerable. Praise Be to God, during our war, we had outstanding martyrs. However, becoming martyred on that battlefield was very different from being martyred on the battlefield of Karbala, especially with a feeling of loneliness, pressure, thirst and threats or harassment that plagued one's family. One may often say, “I am ready to die on this battlefield, but it’s not possible because my child will go hungry or lacks medicine”, it becomes a justification. Sometimes, individuals care more about their families than they care about themselves. They care about their infant more than self. Imagine men going to the battlefield with an infant, wife, mother or the entire family; while all of them are exposed to this danger one must prevent the weakness of his resolve. The significance of Abbas Ibn Ali, Habib Ibn Mazahir and John Bin Huwai resides in this persona, not in their height or muscular built. Why can Abbas (a.s.) make the world passionate about him?
Imam Khamenei:
Abal-Fadhl Al-Abbas's value derives from his selfless endeavor, self-sacrifice, sincerity, and loyalty to the Imam of his time; his nobility originates from his patience and resistance; it arises from his refraining to drink water while he was thirsty and standing by the river [in respect and sympathy for his companions who were thirsty]. Shi’a traditions are at the pinnacle of excellence. Our Shi’ite principals persuaded a Western philosopher, who grew up familiar with Western concepts of philosophy, like Henry Corbyn, to sit attentively in front of Allameh Tabatabai. He felt humbled before this wisdom and thereafter became a Shi’a disciple who promotes Shi’a principlas in Europe. Shi’a traditions can be taught at all echelon, ranging from an average intellect to the highest rank of philosophers. Abbas Ibn Ali's value resides in his jihad, self-sacrifice, devotion and knowledge of Imam in his time. The path of Imam Hussain is a sweet, successful path
Imam Khamenei:
The 40 day period from Ashura to Arbaeen is one of the most important periods in the history of Islam. The day of Ashura is the peak of importance, and these 40 days between Ashura and Arbaeen are similar to the day of Ashura. If the day of Ashura is the peak of endeavor accompanied by sacrifice – the sacrifice of one’s life, loved ones, children and companions - then these 40 days are the peak of endeavor accompanied by clarification, disclosure and explanation. If it had not been for those 40 days and if it had not been for the great movement of Zainab al-Kubra (peace be upon her), Hazrat Umm al-Kulthum and Hazrat Sajjad (peace be upon him), perhaps the phrase “to liberate your servants from ignorance and from being left to wander in the dark” would not have been realized. It was this great movement and the extraordinary patience of the Holy Prophet’s Household led by Zainab al-Kubra (peace be upon her) and Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) that were able to make the event of Karbala immortal. Their clarification was complementary to that sacrifice in the true sense of the word ...

The reason the Karbala martyrs are so great
Imam Khamenei:
This is the reason for the greatness of the Karbala martyrs! They did not fear the greatness of the enemy because of a sense of duty, which was jihad in the path of God and religion. They were not terrified by their being alone. They did not seize on the excuse of being few in numbers to escape from the enemy. This is what brings greatness to a person, a leader, and a nation—not fearing the phony greatness of the enemy. Ayatollah Khamenei July 1, 1992

Why are the martyrs of Karbala the masters of the martyrs throughout history?
Many people were martyred in the way of God and alongside the Holy Prophet (swa), the Commander of the Faithful (as) and divine prophets But none of these events is comparable to the event of Karbala. There is a difference between a person who enters the arena with the praise and encouragement of friends and companions and with a hope of victory and who is martyred in such conditions... and a person who enters the arena in a dark and gloomy world while not only do all the great personalities of the world of Islam refuse to accompany him, but they also blame him for engaging in battle. The latter enters the arena while there is no hope of assistance from anyone... He enters the arena with a few sincere friends and with his family - including his wife, his sister, his nieces and nephews, his six-month-old son and a few young members of his family - while his friends and supporters in Kufa refuse to accompany him. This is a strange event.

Commemorating the blood of martyrs of Karbala
Imam Khamenei: Sometimes the sufferings and efforts made to commemorate the blood of a martyr are no less than martyrdom itself. Such are the thirty years of suffering of Imam Sajjad (pbuh) and the years of suffering of Zainab Al-Kubra (pbuh). God has preserved the event of Karbala throughout history
Imam Khamenei:
We need to read between the lines, and carefully ponder over the life story of Hussain ibn-Ali (a.s.). Many have risen up in the world; they have had a leader, and they were also killed. Among them, numerous were children of the prophets and Imams (a.s.). However, Imam Hussain (a.s.) was unique. The event of Karbala was extraordinary. The martyrs of Karbala have a special position. Why? The answer is to be searched in the nature of the event, which gives a lesson to us all, including and maybe, in particular, to you, dear [disabled] war veterans.
One characteristic of the event is that Imam Hussain's movement was solely and truly for the sake of God, the religion and rectifying the society of Muslims. This first feature is very important. Imam Hussain (a.s.) stated: "I did not rise up [leaving my homeland] out of self-interest, for the sake of seeking pleasure, corruption or oppression;” —that is, it was not for swaggering, selling himself, desiring something for himself, or a pretentious spectacle. There was not even a bit of oppression or corruption in this movement. “I rise up only for the sake of rectification of the nation of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah."-This is an extremely important point. The Arabic word used which means 'only' indicates that there is no other intention that can contaminate the pure intention and the sun-like mind of Imam Hussain (a.s.). When addressing the first Muslims of the early years of Islam, the Holy Quran states: "Do not be like those who marched out boastfully to show off their strength to people and hinder people from the way of God {Quran; 8:47}.” Here, Imam Hussain (a.s.) says: “I did not rise up out of self-interest or for the sake of seeking pleasure.”
These are two different manners, two different behaviors. The Quran reads: "Do not be like those who marched out boastfully”, arrogantly, and selfishly. It means that this kind of behavior lacks the purity of intentions. That is, in the movement of the corrupt approach, it is only self-centeredness that matters. “To show off”: This kind of a person adorns himself, rides an expensive horse, wears pieces of jewellery, recites arrogant chants, and comes out. Toward where? Toward the battlefield. The battlefield is where this person and many like him will die. Such a person rises up in this manner. There is nothing but arrogance in him.
This is one way [of coming out]. On the other side, the best example is Hussain Ibn Ali (AS) who is pure from any form of selfishness and is not after self-interest or personal, familial, or communitarian gains. This is the first characteristic of the movement of Hussain Ibn Ali (AS). The more selfless one is, the more value does he gain in what he does. The more one moves away from the peak of selflessness, the closer they get to the peak of selfishness, egotism, self-interest, personal and seeking familial gain and such which is a whole other spectrum. Between that pure selflessness and pure selfishness, there is a vast field. Going from one side of it to the other decreases the value of our work. It becomes less fruitful, and also less durable. This is an outcome of the matter. The more defective the product, the sooner it decays. If it is pure, it will never go bad. Giving you a physical example, a piece of 100% pure gold never decays. Nor does it rust. But the more copper, iron, and other cheaper elements are added to the alloy, the more it becomes prone to decay and destruction. This is a general rule.
This applies to what is tangible. But when it comes to spirituality, these equations are far more discerning. We do not understand it because of our materialistic and ordinary vision. Nonetheless, men of vision and understanding perceive. The Critic in this matter, the Goldsmith and the Jeweler, is God the Almighty. And for sure, the Critic sees well. If there is an ounce of impurity in our work, its value would diminish accordingly, and God would reduce its lasting effect.
God, the Exalted, is an insightful critic. The work of Imam Hussain (a.s.) is a work in which there is not even a slight hint of impurity. Hence, you see this quality achievement has lasted to this day and will last forever. Who could believe that after these people were killed in that desert far from their homes, while their bodies were buried there; with so much propaganda spread against them; all killed in such a heartless manner; their hometown of Medina put on fire even after their martyrdom (the story of Harra, which happened the next year); -- this rose garden was devastated, and the petals of roses were all thrusted, yet, later anyone would feel the aroma of the rosewater from this garden? According to which rule of nature, a petal of that rose garden can last so long in the nature? However, you view, the more time passes by, the more the aroma of that rose garden spreads. There are some people who do not believe that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the grandfather of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and that he follows in his path; yet, they believe in Imam Hussain (a.s.)! Some do not believe in his father, Ali (a.s.), yet, they believe in Imam Hussain (a.s.)! They do not believe in God—the God Imam Hussain worshipped, yet, before Imam Hussain (a.s.), they are humble and respectful! This is the outgrowth of Imam Hussain’s purity.

Keeping the memory of martyrs alive a necessary repetition for society
The following is the full text of the speech delivered by Imam Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in a meeting with the organizers of the Congress for the Commemoration of the 10,000 Martyrs from the East Azerbaijan Province. This meeting took place in the Imam Khomeini Hussainiyah on December 6, 2023. The statements of Imam Khamenei were later published on December 14, 2023 at the place of this congress.
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful All praise is due to God, Lord of the Worlds, and peace and greetings be upon our Master, Muhammad, and his pure Progeny, particularly the Remnant of God on earth. I would like to thank all the dear brothers and sisters here for this useful, necessary action to keep the memory and names of the outstanding martyrs of Azerbaijan and Tabriz alive. They are, of course, unforgettable. Once again you have spoken about them in a better, higher, clearer fashion. What you did is very good and very appropriate. Of course, there was a bit of a time gap between the first commemoration ceremony, which was held several years ago, and this commemoration ceremony. It is appropriate for these kinds of measures, commemorations, tributes, and remembrances to be repeated more frequently, in the same way that we honor the memory of the martyrs of Karbala every year during the month of Muharram. That has been repeated over 1,300 years, and it is not a mundane repetition. It is one of the necessary, useful repetitions for today’s society and for the society of the future. Well, there are plenty of admirable things to say about Tabriz and Azerbaijan, and I have spoken about this many times during our annual meetings. Regarding the martyrs, the statements of the respected Friday prayer leader and the honorable commander of the IRGC today in this meeting were very good and complete. Praise God, these gentlemen have paid attention to all of the recommendations that I wanted to give and the ones I usually mention, and you have taken action on many of them. Let me just say that one of our duties is to be aware of ourselves, the identity of ourselves. The Iranian nation should not forget its identity. If it forgets its identity, it will be harmed, it will be slapped in the face, and fall behind. Regarding those who have forgotten Almighty God, He says, “Do not be like those who forget Allah, so He makes them forget their own souls” (Quran 59:19). They forgot God, [so] God made them forget themselves. This shows that paying attention to oneself, one's identity, and one's own characteristics is necessary for every person, nation, and group. Azerbaijan must pay full attention to the identity that has caused it to stand out. The place we call Azerbaijan truly has an outstanding identity among the people of the Iranian nation. Azerbaijan is the birthplace of martyrs and people who have sacrificed their lives, and this is not just limited to the Sacred Defense. It was the same before that, and it remains the same after that. With regard to matters related to the event of the Islamic Revolution, if we are to look at it, the martyrs of Azerbaijan started from before the Revolution. That is, from the beginning of Imam Khomeini and the Iranian nation’s movement, the behavior leading to martyrdom and the movement toward martyrdom in Azerbaijan began and has continued up until today. In the case of the Defenders of the Shrines, there are martyrs from Azerbaijan. Of course, the peak of these sacrifices, the peak of showing the high value and character of Azerbaijan, was seen during the Sacred Defense in the figures that were mentioned, such as Martyr Mehdi Bakeri, Martyr Hamid Bakeri, Martyr Tajallai, and Martyr Yaghchian. These were our great, distinguished brothers who went to meet God. Praise God, there are other dear, prominent figures like them as well today. So, this characteristic of seeking martyrdom and the outstanding behavior that was observed in their sacrifices is not limited to the Imposed War. This wasn’t just during the Sacred Defense. This began before the Revolution and has continued up until today. This city [Tabriz] has two martyred Friday prayer leaders. In other words, out of the five Friday prayer leaders who were martyred and who were among the best of our clerics in the country, two of them came from the city of Tabriz. These things are very important. What I am saying as a recommendation is that, first of all, do not let the effervesce of the martyrs’ blood abate. Commemorating the martyrs should not be limited to just reminiscing about them. The piety, the sacrifices, the bravery, the shining gem within people like Martyr Bakeri, which drew them to the middle of the field, for example, should be reflected and conveyed to the younger generation to serve as role models for them. Our youth crave role models. The best role models are these. Some nations, which completely lack this or lack it to a great extent, create and make up their own role models without them even existing. We have these role models before us. Martyr Bakeri should not just be looked at on the battlefield. We should also see what he was like behind the scenes of the battlefield. We should see what he was like when he went to Tabriz University. We should see what activities he took part in during the pre-revolutionary period. That spirit should be seen. I met Martyr Mehdi Bakeri in Mashhad before the Revolution. He was a high-spirited, enthusiastic, intelligent person who was well able to analyze different events. That is what made him shine like that and draw people’s hearts toward him during the Sacred Defense. This kind of spirit needs to be reflected. If we make films, if we write books, and if we compile and publish books of recollections about him, we must be careful to reflect his spirit in them. This spirit is a constructive spirit. This is the first issue. Do not let the effervesce of the martyrs’ blood abate. As I mentioned at the beginning of my speech, make these like the mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussain (pbuh). Every year during Muharram, when it’s Ashura, it’s as though you are seeing Ashura before your eyes, the Ashura that took place in the year 61 AH. The events are reflected, and the characters come alive before the eyes of the audience. This must also take place with regard to the martyrs of the Sacred Defense and the 10,000 martyrs you spoke about. This is one point. The second matter is that you should not forget the families of the martyrs. Unfortunately, many of their parents have passed away. They have joined their martyrs. Make use of the memories and accounts related by those who are available, whether they are the wives of the martyrs, their parents, their colleagues, or their friends. For example, Martyr Bakeri had a large number of coworkers during the war. Praise God, some of them are still alive, healthy, and prepared to talk about the details of his life that they saw. Courage does not exist only in fighting battles. Courage is needed in self-control, in speaking, in not speaking, in forbearance, and in taking action. All of these things are very important. There are some who had seen and known these martyrs personally. Make use of these people. Interview them. Talk to them. The characteristics of the martyrs should be recorded and recognized in the form of real documentation. This is another matter. Another issue is that when we are studying the martyrs, the foundation that brought about their ascension should also be identified, that is, the people or those who ignited the first sparks, such as Martyr Qazi Tabatabai. He ignited the first spark and the first movement during the Revolution, for example, on February 18, 1978. He was the one who took the first step, invited people to his area and his mosque, and so on. So the foundation for these things must be identified. Why is it that after the events that took place in Qom, the next movement took place in Tabriz and not in this city or that city? What feature do these people have that allowed them to produce and raise these kinds of young people and to bring forth these kinds of martyrs? These are very important matters. We are talking about an ethnic identity, a national identity, a religious identity [, etc.] I once mentioned in a similar gathering of brothers and sisters from Azerbaijan that the late Sattar Khan had a note in his pocket from the scholars of Najaf during the Constitutional Revolution, the events that it involved, and the actions he was taking at that time. He had consulted the scholars of Najaf and asked them a question, and they had written their responses. So, he took action based on this intention. This is very important. What is the foundation for a move? This needs to be clear. This shows us that. If these things are done, then the movement will continue. I would like to refer to the second tactical airbase (Tabriz Air Base). Well, the 31st Ashura Division clearly included individuals who truly shined. That great movement of the planes, our fighters had carried out that great task in the very first days of the war. Of course, they had taken off from the first base and other bases, including the third and fourth bases. They did this during the first week of the war, and I went to the Majlis [Iranian parliament] and presented a report of this endeavor to the representatives in the Majlis. These are noteworthy matters. They are extremely important, and God willing, they should be preserved in people’s minds and recorded in the Iranian nation’s historical memory. The most important thing that needs to be done is to record these significant events, these influential, unique phenomena — events that are unparalleled at times — in the Iranian nation’s historical memory. Our youth and our teenagers should know these things. Of course, we have not worked as hard as we should have, and many of our youth do not know about our prominent figures. They are also unaware of many events. We need to share these things, whether it is by way of official broadcasting outlets such as the IRIB, etc., or by way of the devices and means that are available to people today. I hope the Almighty God will grant all of you success so that you will be able to complete this great task. God willing, in the future, the time gap between these commemoration ceremonies and remembrances will be less than the time gap that existed between today’s session and the previous commemoration ceremony. May God’s greetings, mercy, and blessings be upon you.

Imam Khamenei: The clearest example [of God giving blessing to a martyr’s blood] is the case of the pure blood of Imam Hussain (pbuh). The enemies tried very hard to reduce the splendor of Muharram this year, but they did not succeed. This year’s Muharram and Ashura were more fervent, more spirited, and more enlightening than all previous years. This is the work of God that the Karbala tragedy, which took place in a desert and which happened in less than a single day, created a flame that has been growing more and more throughout history … August 13, 2023

Imam Hussain’s movement, an instructive movement, a role model for nations ...
Imam Khamenei:
The concept of guardianship was embodied by Imam Hussain (a.s.) with all its dimensions and with all the necessary and possible means. This is not to say that others did not do such a thing or did not want to do such a thing, rather it means that this movement was fully realized in the behavior of the Lord of the Martyrs (a.s.) during his ten-year imamate. One can clearly notice in his lifestyle all the methods that could have been used by a descendant of the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) to preserve the great legacy of Islam which has been passed down by the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) and his father as well as their genuine followers. We can clearly see everything in the lifestyle of the Lord of the Martyrs (a.s.) - everything ranging from clarification, to forewarning, to promotion of Islam, to provoke the conscience of prominent figures of his time during a sermon in Mina. All these things are tangible in the lifestyle of the Lord of the Martyrs (a.s.). Later on, he stood up against a great deviation and laid down his life. Imam Hussain (a.s.) was aware of the consequences of his movement. He was an infallible Imam. Infallible Imams' extensive knowledge and insight are beyond our heads. Imam Hussain (a.s.) revolted to set a role model and he refused to surrender. He asked people to help him and when a group of people from Kufa expressed their willingness to accompany him on this path, Imam Hussain (a.s.) accepted their offer and moved towards Kufa and he did not give up in the middle of the way. Imam Hussain (a.s.) stood up against the deviated current of his time, which was extremely dangerous. And this became a lesson and Imam Hussain (a.s.) himself makes the same point. That is to say, he backed up his action with the order of Islam. He said that his duty was what he was doing. He said that he had to express his opposition, no matter what the consequences were. He said, "It is good if my destiny is a victory and if my destiny is martyrdom, so much the better." This was how Imam Hussain (a.s.) acted. This was a perfect instance of self-sacrifice and it safeguarded Islam. This move preserved Islam. This move institutionalized values in society. If Imam Hussain (a.s.) had not accepted this danger, if he had not made a move, if he had not taken action, if his blood had not been shed, if those great tragedies had not happened to the shrine of the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.), to Imam Ali's (a.s.) daughter and to the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) descendants, this event would not have gone down in history. The event that could have prevented that great deviation had to shock people and history as much as the deviation did. This shows Imam Hussain's (a.s.) self-sacrifice. Of course, this is easier said than done. What Imam Hussain (a.s.) did was an extraordinary feat. That is to say, the dimensions of his action are far more than what we estimate. We usually ignore aspects and details. Once I spoke about Imam Hussain's (a.s.) patience. His patience was not limited to enduring thirst or seeing his companions being killed. These things are relatively easy to tolerate. The kind of patience that is difficult to practice is to listen to influential, aware and respectable people who keep creating doubts and telling you that what you are doing is dangerous and wrong. Who did those things? People like Abdullah Ja'far, Abdullah Zubair and Abdullah Abbas. These prominent figures of that time were constantly telling Imam Hussain (a.s.) not to do what he was doing. If it were somebody else, somebody who did not have that determination and stable character, he would have thought, "Well, I did my duty. These people are talking like this and the world is acting like that, so I should just say what I am supposed to say and do nothing else." A person who decides to stand up against such statements, such temptations, such doubts and such efforts to bend sharia and is not dissuaded from continuing his path - such a person is the one who can give rise to such a great transformation. In this regard our magnanimous Imam (r.a.) was similar to the Lord of the Martyrs. I explained this in another meeting and I do not want to go into the details now. This was how Imam Hussain (a.s.) acted as a guardian. Jul 4, 2011

Lady Fatimah Zahra's (pbuh) behavior in society is a model
Well, the things that are well-known about this honorable personage in the field of cultural affairs includes the issue of hijab, the issue of standing up to falsehood in order to prove the truth, and supporting the issue of Wilaya. These are things that can be seen and which were repeated too. Another part of Lady Fatimah’s (pbuh) teachings was the issue of helping others. I would like to say a few words about this social solidarity today and about helping others. When her son asked, “Mother, why did you only pray for others?” her answer was, “First the neighbor, then ourselves.” This is a lesson. It reminds us of our social responsibility. Another example is that of helping the poor, orphans, and captives as referred to in Surah Insan. The Almighty God refers to this event as something magnificent, and 17 or 18 verses are dedicated to it. This shows the significance of this event. “They give food, for the love of Him, to the needy, the orphan and the prisoner, [saying,] ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah’” (Quran 76:8-9). It is a symbolic event. Yes, these honorable individuals and all the members of their family endured hunger. They helped the orphan, the poor, and the captive. This actually happened, but it is also symbolic. Lady Fatimah (pbuh) could have asked them to go to the Mosque instead. There was an Islamic government after all. However, the government’s duty does not remove society’s duty. People in a society are required to truly help one another. Various types of assistance should be offered in society, including financial assistance, help in thinking, protecting the honor of others, etc. This is a lesson from Lady Fatimah Zahra's teachings and her understanding.” Ayatollah Khamenei Feb. 15, 2020

Fatima (as) is representative of God among the infallibles
Imam Khamenei: This is based on a hadith which has been narrated by these Imams (a.s.). Fatima Zahra (s.a.) is the representative of other divine representatives. She is the Imam of Imams (a.s.). In the Holy Quran, Allah the Exalted has mentioned how much women should be respected. To Allah the Exalted, women are like men. There is no difference between men and women in terms of spiritual and divine position. This path has been created for human beings, not only for men or for women. Allah the Exalted has created a woman like Fatima Zahra (s.a.) about whom Imam Askari (a.s.) or Imam Hadi (a.s.) say, "We are the representatives of Allah among the people and Fatima is representative of Allah among us." [Atayeb al-Bayan, volume 13, page 236]. This is based on a hadith which has been narrated by these Imams (a.s.). Fatima Zahra (s.a.) is the representative of other divine representatives. She is the Imam of Imams (a.s.). Is there a greater personality? She was infallible. And such a person was a woman. Great women such as Mary, Sara, Asiya and many other great women are the outstanding personalities of the world. In the path of perfection and transcendence, it is human beings which move forward. There is no difference between men and women in terms of social rights. There is no difference between men and women in terms of individual rights. Of course, in specific cases, women have been given certain privileges and in a number of other cases, men have been given certain privileges. This is based on the nature of men and women. This is Islam. It has the most reasonable, the most dignified and the most practical laws that one can ever imagine regarding the issue of gender. We should follow this path. One of the major ways to do this is to raise a family, safeguard the family environment and preserve love in the family. And this is the responsibility of the lady of the house. May 1, 2013

People's minds do not have the capability to evaluate and measure these spiritual dimensions. However, we can make their behavior a model for ourselves We should make efforts. The lesson of the life of Siddiqat al-Taherah - Fatima Zahra (God's greetings be upon her) - is to make efforts, show diligence and lead a pure life, as that great personality was the manifestation of enlightenment and purity: she was "pure, clean, immaculate, virtuous, pious and moral" [Kamel al-Ziarat, page 310]. People's minds do not have the capability to evaluate and measure these spiritual dimensions. However, we can make their behavior a model for ourselves. This was also pointed out in the poems that the friends in this meeting recited. The spiritual positions of these personalities are one thing and the patterns of behavior which are in front of our eyes are quite another. This does not mean that we can emulate these personalities by displaying a second version of their patterns of behavior. This is not what it means. However, we can follow them at least. The Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) said, "I know that to adopt such a hard way of life is beyond you, but at least try to be pious. Help me and be my companion in virtue, diligence and simple living" [Nahjul Balaghah, Letter 45]. After he describes his lifestyle - although he had a lofty position and had access to many resources, he lived a life of piety and abstinence - he says, "You cannot behave like me, but you can help me". With what? We can help him with piety, avoidance of sins, effort and diligence. These are our responsibilities. They have illustrated the goals for us, both individual and personal goals, and social, political and general goals. In personal goals, our lofty ideal is reaching the peak of human dignity. Everyone has been promised that they can take this lofty and limitless flight. You youth are more capable than us. These are the personal goals. And our great social goals are creating a pure Islamic life and Islamic society, one that allows individuals to move towards this goal. Such a society is well-developed, free, independent, highly moral, united, unanimous, pious and religious. These are the goals of Islamic society. The main social and political goal of Islam is creating a world which is an introduction to the afterlife and which helps individuals to achieve paradise easily. They have illustrated these goals for us. What is the way to achieve these goals? How can we reach these goals? As Imam Ali (a.s.) said, we should help him to reach this goal - this is the Commander of the Faithful's (a.s.) command. This goal is what the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) did in his entire life and during his efforts and jihad, which is creating such a world for all the people throughout history. How can we help him? We can help him with virtue, diligence and effort. Laziness is forbidden. Idleness is forbidden. Feeling tired is forbidden. Becoming desperate is forbidden. When this great movement is launched, you have gladdened the blessed heart of Fatima Zahra (God's greetings be upon her) and the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.) because they made all these efforts in order to reach this goal. What factors, forces and what kind of inner strength could make a person become such an ocean of wisdom, piety, sanctity and spiritual transcendence in such a short time? This is a miracle of Islam. The love of Fatima Zahra (s.a.), also known as Siddiqat al-Kubra, is a great blessing for us In her short life, Fatima Zahra (s.a.) achieved the position of the mistress of all women. In other words, she is superior to all great and saintly women throughout history. What factors, forces and what kind of inner strength could make a person become such an ocean of wisdom, piety, sanctity and spiritual transcendence in such a short time? This is a miracle of Islam. Another point is the blessed descendants of this great person. The association of Sura al-Kauther with Fatima Zahra (s.a.) - even if such an association had not existed in our hadith collections - is an accurate association. There are so many blessings that have been bestowed on the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household and on each and every one of the Imams (a.s.). The world is full of enjoyable individual, social, worldly and otherworldly melodies which came out of the pure throats of the Imams (a.s.). Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.), Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.), Imam Hassan al-Mojtaba (a.s.), Imam Sadiq (a.s.), Imam Sajjad (a.s.) and each and every one of the Imams (a.s.) would produce these melodies. See what a great excitement exists in the world of spirituality and in the path of guidance because of the words of these great personalities and their lessons and teachings. They are the children of Fatima Zahra (s.a.). We should sincerely thank God. A number of the poems, which were recited by the friends, contained this point. The love of Fatima Zahra (s.a.), also known as Siddiqat al-Kubra, is a great blessing for us. Thank God we became familiar with her. Thank God we relied on her kindness and thank God we appreciated her value. Thank God we relied on her, asked her to help us gain an understanding of things and expressed our love for her. If you investigate the books written by Sunni scholars on Hazrat Fatima (as), you will see numerous hadiths attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), praising Hazrat Fatima (as); or describing the behavior of the Prophet (pbuh) towards her highness (as). Many of these hadiths were narrated by those who were close to the Prophet (pbuh), like his wives. About Hazrat Fatima (as), whenever we speak of her, words cannot describe her; indeed, we do not know how to express that and what to think [in regard to Fatima (as)]. The scope of this angelic woman's behavioral dimensions, this unique soul, this quintessence of Prophethood and Wilaya is so vast and extensive that it is beyond our understanding: this astonishes us completely. As you know, living in the same era is a factor that prevents accurate acknowledgement of great personalities. Shining stars among human societies, while living, went mostly unrecognized by others who lived during their time, except for a few of the prominent persons among prophets and pious individuals--only known to a small number of the people.
However, Hazrat Fatima (as) was such a well-known personality that, at her time, not only her father, husband, children (pbut) and her special followers were aware of her high position, but even those who didn’t have a close relationship with her admired her. For instance, there is a famous hadith from Aisha which reads: “I didn’t see a person more similar to the Prophet (pbuh) than Fatima (as) who looked like him in appearance, face, brightness, behavior and manners. When Fatima (as) came to see the Prophet (pbuh), he got to his feet and advanced toward her enthusiastically.” The Arabic expression used in this hadith implies this meaning: "When Hazrat Fatima (as) entered the room, the Prophet did not only stand up [as a sign of respect], he stood and walked towards her." In some hadiths from the same narrator [Aisha] we read: “He kissed Hazrat Fatima (as), took her hand, and invited her to sit in his place.” This reveals the high status of Hazrat Fatima (as). Imam Khamenei:
She was a young woman who enjoyed such a lofty position of spirituality which was equal to saints, prophets and the like and she was called the mistress of all women by divine messengers. Besides this spiritual position, each outstanding characteristic and each important role in the personal life of this great lady is a lesson. The spiritual positions of Fatima Zahra (God's greetings be upon her) are among the best spiritual positions which belong only to a few individuals. She was infallible. Infallibility is particular to a few individuals who are chosen by God and that great Hazrat - Fatima Zahra (God's greetings be upon her) - is one of these few individuals. We should consider the fact that that Muslim woman and that mujahide in the way of God lived only to the age of 20. Of course, different narrations say that her age was from 18 to 25 years at the time of her martyrdom. She was a young woman who enjoyed such a lofty position of spirituality which was equal to saints, prophets and the like and she was called the mistress of all women by divine messengers. Besides this spiritual position, each outstanding characteristic and each important role in the personal life of this great lady is a lesson. Her piety, her modesty and purity, her jihad (striving for the sake of God), her care for her husband, her way of raising children, her understanding of politics and her presence in the most important arenas of the life of an individual of those times - whether during her childhood and teenage years or after her marriage - are each a lesson. They are a lesson not only for you ladies but also for the entire humanity. Therefore, this coincidence is a lesson for us. We should pay careful attention to the life of Fatima Zahra (s.a.), we should understand her life with a new outlook and we should make it a model for ourselves in the real sense of the word.

Three dimensions of Hazrat Fatima's (as) personality according to Ayatollah Khamenei
Presently, these days belong to the most superior woman who walked on the earth, the greatest lady throughout history: Lady Fatima (as). She was an exemplary woman, who, although lived a short life and departed earth as a young lady, is a role model for all zealous, devout Muslim men and women, and even non-Muslim people who are familiar with her prestigious position. We should follow Fatima's lead. During the life of Fatima (as), there is one point that we should consider. Here, we will not question the degree of her spiritual position and knowledge; we are not even capable of comprehending the spiritual greatness of Fatima (as). In fact, at the top of human spirituality and perfection, only God knows and understands the high level of such individuals--and others at their level. Thus, Fatima (as) is only known to her husband, her great father Mohammad (pbuh), and her pure children. The people of her time, of other times, and we in this era are not able to recognize the brilliance and splendour of her spirituality. The bright light of spirituality is not detectable by everybody’s eyes; our short-sighted and weak eyes are unable to see the luminosity of humanity in these great personalities. Therefore, we do not discuss the definition of Fatima’s (as) spirituality. However, in her ordinary life, there is an important point: on the one hand, as a Muslim woman, she perfectly performs her duties at home and behaves nicely towards her husband and children; on the other hand, as a zealous, tireless person she acts for her causes. In political events, shortly after the death of her father Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), she went to the mosque, gave a speech, expressed her position and defended her cause. Hence, she represented a marvellous, fighting personality that is tireless, enduring, and tolerant. The third aspect of her life reveals her as a devotee of Allah, who performs prayers in the dark of nights, uprises for Allah, and is humble before Allah; and, in the worshipping chamber, this young lady worships and speaks to God like the old pious people. Combining these three dimensions is the luminous point in the life of Fatima (as). She did not separate the three dimensions. Some people think that those who worship God are only concerned with prayers and worship, and cannot be involved in politics. Or, some people think that those--women and men--who are active in politics and the arena of jihad on the path of Allah, if a woman, she cannot perform her duties at home as a mother and a wife; and as a man, he cannot be a good businessman, husband or father. They think these qualities are contradictory. Whereas, in the view of Islam, these aspects not only reveal that there are no contradictions, but they are also helpful towards achieving the perfect human personality.

Four lessons by Lady Fatima Zahra for humanity

We should make greater efforts [towards emulating Fatima Zahra (pbuh)]. One of the most prominent examples of “Kawthar” is the sacred soul of Lady Fatimah (pbuh), in whom Allah the Exalted has placed spiritual and physical succession to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Contrary to the assumption of the reproaching enemies, this young woman with her bountiful blessings and deep spirit, was successful in preserving the name, memory, school and teachings of the Prophet (pbuh) more than any illustrious, great child has ever been seen to do. "I saw nothing but beauty": Zeinab al-Kubra (sa)
On the day of Ashura Zeinab al-Kubra watched many of her dear ones go to the battlefield to get martyred. She watched Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.), Abbas, Ali Akbar, Qasem, her children, and other dear ones go to the battlefield. After they were martyred, she went through all those pains: The invasion of the enemy, disrespect, and the responsibility to take care of the surviving children and women. Is it possible to compare the enormity of this tragedy with physical pain? But when she was faced with these difficulties, Zeinab al-Kubra did not tell God to save her. She did not say, "O my Lord, save me." ...While the shredded body of her brother lay in front of her eyes, tells God, "O God, accept this sacrifice from us." When she was asked to describe what she had seen, she replied, "I did not see anything but beauty." All those tragedies were beautiful to Zeinab al-Kubra because they were from and for God - because they were supposed to promote the word of God.

Imam Khamenei: Lady Zeinab (as) is a perfect example of a Muslim woman: a role model for women's education, which Islam presents before the eyes of the world. Lady Zeinab represents a multi-dimensional personality: she is wise and well-educated with great knowledge; a distinguished person; anyone who meets her, feels humble before the greatness of her wise soul and her insight … Lady Zeinab has interwoven a woman’s enthusiastic affection with a believer’s greatness, stability, and sedateness of heart; and the clear, articulate language of a fighter, (Mujahed) on the path of God, and limpid insight that pours out of her mouth and heart, astonishes listeners and spectators … Those who have not known the slightest degree of religion or spirituality can never comprehend such greatness in a woman. Those who identify women as ornaments with makeup, as ignorant, and as toys for men's play, can by no means comprehend the basis of a woman's identity within the logic and viewpoint of Islam …

Imam Khamenei: Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) presented a deep analysis of her society's pathologies. She spoke firmly and eloquently in that difficult situation. It was not the case that she had an audience sitting in front of her and listening in silence. She was not speaking the way an orator would speak to his audience. She was surrounded by the enemies, holding spears in their hands. There were also some ordinary people there - the same people who gave up Moslem to Ibn Ziad, the same people who wrote letters to Imam Hussein and then broke their allegiance to him, the same people who hid in their homes exactly when they were supposed to stand up to Ibn Ziad. Among the people there were also some individuals who were not courageous enough to do what they should have done, and they were watching Imam Ali's daughter in tears on that day. Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) was faced with this motley and unreliable crowd, yet she spoke in a firm manner. She was an exemplary woman in history. Such women cannot be considered weak. This faithful feminine nature may reveal itself in difficult conditions. She is a role model for all great men and women in the world. She presented a deep analysis of the problems facing the revolution started by the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) and Imam Ali (a.s.). She said, "You could not distinguish between right and wrong in the fitna. You were unable to fulfill your duty. Zainab bint Ali (as): The woman who saved Islam
A part of the sermon Hadrat Zainab (as) gave with utmost bravery in the gathering of Yazid son of Muawiya in Syria shook his majlis (gathering) and still echoes through time and space:
“By Allah (SWT), you cannot remove us from the minds (of people), and you cannot fade our message. You will never reach our glory and can never wash the stain of this crime from your hands. Your decisions will not be stable, your period of ruling will be short, and your population will scatter. In that day, a voice will shout: "Indeed may the curse of Allah (SWT) be upon the oppressors..."
Righteous people should not at all be affected by the harsh circumstances they undergo, that is exactly what Hadrat Zeinab (as) stressed in her speeches. She reiterated they (AhlulBayt) are the people of strong presence, strength, confidence and faith despite the drastic and harsh calamity that fell upon her and her family. The prophet's household turned this threat into an opportunity and made use of the entire situation and the circumstances they went through lead by the courageous Hadrat Zainab (as).
A model of defiance against oppression and injustice. A woman of patience and endurance. There was no act of worship greater than continuing the rising of her brother, delivering fiery sermons in the path of Kufa and Syria, and awakening ignorant people who were deceived by poisonous propaganda of Yazid son of Muawiya and martyred Imam Hussain (as) as a man who was out of Islam. Her sermons created a movement in Kufa and Damascus which shook the bases of Yazid's kingdom and even Yazid's son refused to replace his father as the king, and after a while, quitted the government while disgracing the oppressing dynasty of Umayyads …
In her lifetime, Hadrat Zainab (as) had endured immense pain from witnessing her loved ones martyred before her eyes, but she never objected to the destiny decreed upon her by Allah. The completeness of her submission is monumental. The grief she expressed was an outpouring of her incredible humanity.
Hadrat Zainab’s role was exemplary. It showed how bold Muslim women were and how they played a key role in consolidating Islamic teachings. Today, despite so much progress and the spread of education, so many Muslim women are suppressed. In some alleged Muslim societies, a woman’s voice is banned from even being heard in public; and here was Zainab (as) from the Imam’s family who became a public speaker to save Islamic values. The leadership of the family fell to Hadrat Zainab after Karbala, and she proved to be more than what was expected of her.
Today, women have to learn much from her example and leadership qualities. Her public role in the battle of Karbala has much to teach us both Muslim men and women. The only way for women in general and Muslim woman in particular could pay respects to her sacrifice is by being inspired by her life to be courageous in the face of tyranny, patient in times of trouble, and submissive to the will of God. Hadrat Zainab bint Ali (as) the role model for the righteous will forever teach us all that when we undergo countless trials in our lives, we should see nothing but beauty in them.

Fatima al-Zahra (A.S.): The Secret of Creation, the Measure of Truth, and the Axis of Existence An excerpt from the treatise Sharḥ al-Sirr, on the occasion of Fatimiyya Before time began, before space took form, before the Pen inscribed upon the Tablet, a light was created-not of matter, nor of imagination. A light that God preserved in a vessel beneath the Throne and named it "Fatima." This light was not merely a prelude to creation, but the origin of divine ontology. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: "The light of .Fatima was created before the creation of the heavens and the earth" (1) In a divine narration, God said: "Were it not for you, I would not have created the heavens; were it not for Ali, I would not have created you; and were it not for Fatima, I would not have created either of you” (2). Fatima is not on the .margins of creation-she stands at its very center. In the Hadith al-Kisa', Gabriel does not ask who is under the cloak; he asks: "Fatima and her father, her husband, and her sons" (3). This grammatical structure reveals that Fatima is the criterion by which others are known. She is the axis, not the complement. The People of the Cloak are defined by Fatima- not the other way around. She is the radiant center around which prophethood .and guardianship revolve. In Surah al-Kawthar, God says: "Indeed, We have granted you Kawthar." Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) interpreted this verse: "Kawthar is Fatima, and her progeny are the Imams” (4). Fatima is Kawthar-abundant goodness, the continuation of prophethood, the stream of guardianship flowing through history. She is not merely the mother of Hasan and Husayn; she is the mother of the .Imams, the mother of the Ummah, and the mother of truth. Compared to other sacred women in religious history, Fatima holds a unique and unparalleled station. Mary is the symbol of purity; Asiya, the embodiment of faith amidst tyranny; Khadijah, the loyal companion of revelation; Sarah, the mother of nations. But Fatima transcends them all. She is not only a mother, but the architect of the Muhammadan nation; not only a worshipper, but the orator of justice; not only oppressed, but the martyr of guardianship. If Mary stood in .the sanctuary, Fatima stood in the battlefield of divine leadership Fatima is the manifestation of divine names in human form. In her gaze is divine beauty; in her speech, heavenly wisdom; in her silence, the cry for justice; in her tears, the storm of gnosis. Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him) said: "We are the proofs of God over His creation, and our grandmother Fatima is the proof of God over us" (5). She is not merely the .perfect human-she is the mirror of divine attributes. Fatima's martyrdom is not an end-it is the beginning of a luminous eruption. From her broken rib flowed strength; from her silent home rose a sermon; from her oppression emerged a revolution. Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "Fatima was a truthful martyr" (6). She is the first martyr in the path of guardianship—a martyr whose silence echoed through history. In an age of crisis in feminine identity, Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her) offers a roadmap for the Muslim woman as a builder of civilization. In her home, she is a wife and mother; in the mosque, a preacher of justice; in society, a defender of truth; in solitude, a mystic of the night. She is the complete woman-not in the masculine or modern definition, but in the divine one. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: "By God, I never angered her nor forced her into anything until God took her soul" (7). This statement is not merely a description .of marital harmony-it is a testimony to her sacred stature. Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her) is not merely a historical figure—she is a divine proclamation for the contemporary human. She is the axis of existence, the measure of truth, and the secret of creation. If the world seeks to return to justice, purity, and truth, it must begin with Fatima. Imam Khamenei:
We should take more (spiritual) advantage of Lady Masumeh (pbuh). She is the direct child of an Imam. An Imam's daughter, an Imam's sister, and an Imam's aunt, she has a great position. The supplication when making a pilgrimage to her shrine reads, "O Fatimah Masumeh, intercede for me so that I may enter heaven, for you have a great honor and status with God." Imam Khamenei: The presence of honorable instructors, luminaries, scholars and seminarians of Qom Seminary have made this meeting great. The coincidence of this meeting with the auspicious birth anniversary of Imam Ali ibn Musa ar-Ridha (as) and his honorable sister, Hazrat Fatima Masoumeh (s.a.), reminds me of their significant movement and migration. Their movement was, undoubtedly, a constructive and significant event of Iranian history and Shia Islam. There is no doubt that Hazrat Fatima Masoumeh (s.a.) played an indisputably important role in the development of Qom. She played an undeniable role, helping this historical and religious city gain prominence. Through her journey, among the companions and friends of the infallible Imams (a.s.), and by traveling through different cities, she sowed the seeds of knowledge and Vilayat, especially after her arrival in Qom. This honorable lady, a young girl who had been educated by the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household, caused Qom to shine as the main stronghold of the teachings of the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household during a dark reign of oppressors. Imam Khamenei: There exist three glittering, outstanding points among all the bright spots of Qom: First, the holy shrine of Hazrat Fatimeh Masoumeh (ra); an exceptional woman, from near her holy grave arose, for the first time, this bounteous, exuberant spring [city of Qom], bringing blessings to the entire world, especially to the Muslim world. Secondly, Qom has forever been the birthplace of innovation in science, jurisprudence, and hadith: the reputed seminary has been present in the holy city. Beginning 1200 years ago, great scholars, jurists, precious philosophers, sovereign hadith writers and eminent authors rose from this city, or they took refuge in Qom, settling underneath the illuminated rays of Hazrat Masoumeh (ra)... Imam Khamenei: Qom is the city of knowledge. It is the city of jihad, the city of insight. The insight of the people of Qom is a crucial factor which has revealed itself during past 32 years. It is interesting that the establishment of the city of Qom resulted from a jihad-like movement accompanied by insight. That is to say, when the Ash'aris settled in this region, they turned it into a center for propagating the teachings of the Holy Prophet's household (a.s.). They started a cultural jihad in this region. Before they came to Qom, the Ash'aris had already engaged in armed jihad. The leader of the Ash'aris had fought alongside Zayd ibn Ali (a.s.). This was why al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf became furious with them, and they were forced to leave for this region and make it the center of knowledge relying on their efforts, insight and knowledge. This caused Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.) to express her tendency to stay in Qom when she was passing by. It was all because of the Ash'ari luminaries who were living in this region.The Ash'aris welcomed Hazrat Masoumeh (s.a.) and invited her to their city. After her demise, they built a shrine for her in this city. As the ones who started this great cultural movement, the people of Qom established a center for promoting the teachings of the Holy Prophet's household (a.s.) at that time. They trained hundreds of religious scholars, hadith experts and exegetes of Islamic and Quranic teachings and send them to different parts of the world of Islam. Knowledge spread from Qom to Khorasan, Iraq and Sham. This shows the insight that the early residents of Qom enjoyed. Qom was established on the basis of insight and jihad. Oct 19, 2010

Serenity at the Summit of Power; Religious Rationality Amid the Media Storm
In an era where politics, religion, and media are intertwined, the presence of a wise, courageous religious leader of a nation can itself be a powerful political message one that acts more .deeply than a thousand words, without noise The recent meeting of the wise Leader of the Islamic Revolution with scientific elites and religious thinkers recalled the ancient bond between "the knowledge of jurisprudence and prudent politics" a connection rooted in the thoughts of scholars like Allameh Na'ini (may he rest in peace), which today has become a tangible manifestation of religious and democratic governance .in the structure of the Islamic Republic. In this meeting, it was once again emphasized that religious rationality neither tends toward passivity nor emotionalism. A system built upon faith and knowledge advances its path with .stability, serenity, and wisdom even when the global atmosphere is filled with psychological warfare and media destabilization. Against the wave of distorted imagery and anxiety-inducing propaganda, the continued programs, meetings, and direct dialogues of the wise and beloved Leader of the Islamic Revolution :adored by monotheists worldwide are signs of inner vitality and national self-confidence. Such a presence, free from slogans, reveals a truth. True power lies in serenity, and strength stems from rationality and faith not from shouting and spectacle. In this perspective, the memory of Allameh Na'ini revives a thought that sees justice, legality, and public oversight as pillars of divine governance. He was, in his time, a theorist of the link. between freedom and faith and today, the continuation of that thought is reflected in the behavior and macro-management of the country. Iran's message to the world today is the same one that shines through the silence and dignity of its leadership. A nation founded on reason, faith, and patience does not fear the storm of propaganda. Imam Khamenei: Imam Hassan Askari (pbuh) considers his followers to be his close family, and says, “There is a close family relationship between you and us.” This means that we are like close family members; like father and child, like brothers. A believer is the brother of another believer. That is, the relationship between two believers is that of brotherhood, as in having the same parents, not even like half-brothers. What is meant by a believer? The person who follows the way of Imam Hassan Askari (pbuh). This is the strong organizational relationship between the Imam (pbuh) and his followers... Imam Hassan al-Askari (pbuh) is a role model for all believers, especially the youth
Imam Khamenei: When this great man was martyred, he was only 28 years old. In the glorious history of Shia Islam, there is no shortage of such people. With all those virtues and spiritual characteristics, the father of our dear Imam of the Age was only 28 years old when he was poisoned by his enemies. He is a role model: the youth feel that they have a perfect role model in front of their eyes. Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a.s.) was martyred when he was 25 and Imam Hassan al-Askari (a.s.) was martyred when he was 28 years old. We are not the only ones who believe in their virtues and greatness, rather their virtues have been acknowledged even by their enemies and those did not believe in their imamate… Ayatollah Khamenei, February 29, 2012

The Shias system spread extensively during the time of Imam Hassan Al-Askari
Imam Khamenei: At the time of Imam Redha, Imam Jawad, Imam Hadi and Imam Hassan al-Askari (pbut), the Shia communications were more extensive than any other time. At no other time were Shia relations and the spread of Shiite system across the World of Islam as extensive as during the time of these three Imams. The presence of lawyers, representatives (nawwabs) and all that is narrated about Imam Hadi and Imam Hassan al-Askari—for instance someone brought money to the Imam and the Imam designated what the money would be spent on—are indicative of the same fact. That is to say, despite being under custody, at the times of these two noble Imams in Samarra as well as Imam Jawad and Imam Redha (though differently), communications with the people expanded. These communications and relations were also present before Imam Ridha, however, Imam Ridha’s moving to Khorasan was very influential on the matter... August 09, 2005

“A mercy for all of creation” is a description that God, the Exalted, has used in referring to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He has not said that the Holy Prophet is a mercy for a specific group of people or a particular nation in the world. He is a mercy for everyone. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) socialized with slaves, ate with them and wore simple clothes. He would eat whatever food was available. He would not dismiss any food as being undesirable. These qualities are unique throughout the history of mankind. Imam Khamenei Sept. 27, 1991

 A great glad tidings, And a truth most radiant The Islamic Republic of Iran the bright horizon of the world's tomorrow In an age when the world flounders in the whirlpool of moral, political, and civilizational crises, and material powers seek dominion over the soul and faith of humankind, the Islamic Republic of Iran shines like a blazing torch in the darkness of the era, with the voice of faith, justice-seeking, and resistance against oppression a new hope for the free, oppressed, and monotheistic nations of the world Today's Iran is not merely a country, but a mission A mission for awakening, for justice, and for the emergence of a truth the world has thirsted for over centuries Though China, by hosting its recent summit and showcasing its diplomatic prowess and modern weaponry, managed to sour the taste of global arrogance and paint a new scene of power before the eyes of the world and though its undeniable economic, diplomatic, and military strength cannot be ignored, for these developments are not mere spectacle but the tangible rise of a new power redefining global balances Yet beyond these advances and behind the West's media clamor, from baseless threats by America and Europe to widespread Islamophobia and regional plots to encircle and weaken Iran, a profound and enduring truth is taking shape Despite orchestrated coups and regime changes in neighboring countries including the overthrow of Syria's legitimate government by agents of America and the Zionist regime and despite ongoing efforts to tighten pressure around Iran, it is the Islamic Republic of Iran that, relying on its dazzling defensive power, deep national solidarity, and faith in divine ideals, has erected a firm barrier against the predatory ambitions of America, Israel, and certain Western states, foiling their schemes one after another Ultimately, it is Islamic Iran that, by winning hearts among the oppressed, freedom-seeking, and monotheistic peoples, and by drawing upon the lofty teachings of Mahdism, leads not only in politics and security, but also in .spirituality and idealism a beacon of hope and awakening for nations By paving the way for the emergence of the savior of justice and the spread of global equity, the Islamic Republic of Iran renders the greatest service to humanity and this is the mission that history will proudly record as a turning point in the path of human civilization And I proclaim this glad tidings: be assured that the storm of seditions shall subside, the veils of false propaganda shall be lifted, and the vile faces of the conspirators and tyrants of the age shall be exposed to the world It is Islamic Iran that shall illuminate the path of humanity's future like a guiding lantern Not by dominion over lands, but by sovereignty over hearts and pure .souls, with truth, sincerity, and support for the oppressed and downtrodden And that day shall be the fulfillment of divine promises and the triumph of the camp of truth A day of global rejoicing upon hearing and witnessing: "I am the remainder of God" beside the exalted Kaaba. The 9th of Rabi' al-Awwal The Dawn of Divine Leadership and the Ark of Salvation In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful "And We desired to show favor to those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders and inheritors." Surah Al-Qasas, Verse 5 Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When the Qa'im rises, there will be no land where the testimony 'There is no" god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah' is not proclaimed." Bihar al Anwar, vol. 52, p. 374 The 9th of Rabi' al-Awwal marks a turning point in sacred history the beginning of the Imamate of the awaited savior, Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his reappeara e). This day is not merely a date it is the dawn of a new .spiritual era, a call to active anticipation and preparation We, the expectant ones, do not wait passively. We walk with insight and hope, and we recognize the Islamic Revolution of Iran as the ark of salvation in the stormy sea of the End Times. Led by Imam Khomeini and continued under the guidance of the Supreme Leader, this revolution is not just political it is a divine .movement that paves the way for global justice Like Noah's Ark, this revolution offers refuge to all Muslim or non-Muslim who seek truth and righteousness. Whoever joins this sacred system aligns themselves with the Mahdist front and will be protected from the trials and tribulations of the apocalyptic age. With the banner of divine leadership, the light of the Qur'an, and the spirit of Karbala, the Islamic Revolution prepares the ground for the promised reappearance. It is the living embodiment of the Qur'anic promise: "We desired to make them leaders" Today, the 9th of Rabi' al Awwal is not only the beginning of Imam Mahdi's leadership it is a reminder of our responsibility: to know, to act, and to connect. our hearts and deeds to the ark of salvation O people of the world! If you seek deliverance from oppression, corruption, and confusion, know that the path to salvation lies in joining this divine revolution. It is the prelude to the reappearance and the reappearance is the dawn of justice, peace, and divine light.

Ghadir concerns all human beings The issue of Ghadir does not just concern the Shia, or just concern the Muslims. It concerns all human beings. If the power in human societies falls in the hands of those who have Satanic characteristics, then the world will continue to go the same way that you see it being manifested in today’s modern world. The event of Ghadir wasn’t just about appointing a successor for the Prophet. Ghadir has two aspects. One aspect is that of appointing a successor. The other aspect is giving attention to the issue of Imamate. Imamate means leading the people and society in matters that have to do with religion and worldly affairs. The indescribable justice of Imam Ali (pbuh) The justice of the Commander of the Faithful [Imam Ali (pbuh)] is indescribable. Everyone attests to Imam Ali’s (pbuh) virtues
Which notable figure is so highly regarded that even those who do not believe in his religion have written volumes of books about him? This is unique to the Commander of the Faithful. This is something distinctive about Ali ibn Abi Talib. Christians talk about him, Hindus talk about him, and Buddhists talk about him. Sunni Muslim brothers, who are not Shia but admire the Commander of the Faithful, write books about him and speak about him. These are some of the virtues of this remarkable individual. He said, “I am not one that can be lulled to sleep by the enemy.” Many people feel reassured by the enemy’s smile and think that danger has passed. They fall asleep with the lullaby of their enemy. Such a person with this immense knowledge said, “Do not refrain from speaking the truth.” If some words seem true to you, and if you believe I should be aware of a certain fact, tell me. Those who praise you cannot truly describe you Imam Hadi (pbuh) said the following about his ancestor, Imam Ali (pbuh), “The one who praises you cannot possibly truly describe you.” It’s impossible. These are the words of Imam Hadi, who himself was a great, infallible Imam. He then said, “The one who is against you and is your enemy cannot possibly hide or conceal your incredible qualities.” These are descriptions of the Commander of the Faithful (pbuh). Ghadir: the greatest Eid Without a doubt, the day of Eid al-Ghadir is an extremely important day. In Islamic hadith, we read that the importance of this day is even more than that of Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr. This does not mean that the importance of these Eids can be undermined in any way. It means that Eid al-Ghadir has a more elevated meaning behind it. The importance of this Eid - the most important Eid based on the Shia hadith – is due to its theme, which is Wilayah (Guardianship). Ghadir springs from Islam’s true meaning and spirit The event of Ghadir rose from the spirit and true meaning of Islam. Consider the fact that despite all of Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) efforts, Almighty God told him 70 days before his death, “O Apostle! Communicate that which has been sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not, you will not have communicated His message” (Quran 5:67). [This means,] "Deliver the message to the people that I have ordered you to deliver. If you don’t deliver this message, you have not completed the mission of your prophethood." A comfortable life for everyone under the shade of Wilayah If Islamic Wilayah exists, living under the shade of the Commander of the Faithful will be achieved for everyone – for the believers, for the transgressors, and for the unbelievers. Even the unbelievers will live comfortably there. It is not the case that only pious people will be comfortable in that environment. Non-pious people will also benefit from the security, equality, justice, and spiritual peace found in that environment. At the time of Imam Redha, Imam Jawad, Imam Hadi and Imam Hassan al-Askari (pbut), the Shia communications were more extensive than any other time. At no other time were Shia relations and the spread of Shiite system across the World of Islam as extensive as during the time of these three Imams. The presence of lawyers, representatives (nawwabs) and all that is narrated about Imam Hadi and Imam Hassan al-Askari—for instance someone brought money to the Imam and the Imam designated what the money would be spent on—are indicative of the same fact. That is to say, despite being under custody, at the times of these two noble Imams in Samarra as well as Imam Jawad and Imam Redha (though differently), communications with the people expanded. These days belong to Imam Hassan al-Askari (a.s.), who can be the role model for all believers, especially for young people. Everybody including his supporters, Shia Muslims, his opponents, those who do not believe in him and everybody else has acknowledged his virtues, his knowledge, his piety, his purity, his infallibility, his courage against his enemies, and his patience and steadfastness in the face of hardships. When this great man was martyred, he was only 28 years old. In the glorious history of Shia Islam, there is no shortage of such people. With all those virtues and spiritual characteristics, the father of our dear Imam of the Age was only 28 years old when he was poisoned by his enemies. He is a role model: the youth feel that they have a perfect role model in front of their eyes. Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a.s.) was martyred when he was 25 and Imam Hassan al-Askari (a.s.) was martyred when he was 28 years old. We are not the only ones who believe in their virtues and greatness, rather their virtues have been acknowledged even by their enemies and those did not believe in their imamate. Believing in the Imam of the Time [Imam Mahdi (aj)] helps people to not succumb [to evil] provided that they fully comprehend this belief. When this belief is truly placed in hearts, its presence is felt among the people. The sacred, beloved, Infallible Imam - the hub of the universe, the refuge of all creation - is present even though he is in occultation and has not reappeared. How is it possible to think he is not present? The devout believers feel his presence in their hearts and with all their emotions and senses. Those individuals who pray and supplicate God, read the Nodbeh Supplication with due attention and recite Ziyara Aal Yasin while understanding what they are reciting, they feel the presence of this great person, even if he has not yet reappeared. His absence does not affect this feeling that he is present. He has not reappeared, but he is present in the hearts and is among the people. How is it possible to believe he is not present? A true Shi’a is someone who feels the Imam’s presence and feels that he is before him. This gives vitality and enthusiasm to a person. This great nation needs this hope more than anything else. The nation, which fights on the path of God and for the sake of the greatness of Islam, has become an honor for all of human history and for all of the history of Islam. One of the things that is required in the area of internal politics is social justice. A society will not be Islamic if social justice does not exist or if justice isn’t ensured in that society. If someone imagines that it is possible for us to practice divine religion – any real religion, not just Islam – in a place where social justice, in the correct and broad sense of the word, has not been established, he should know that he is mistaken. The goal of the prophets was to uphold justice, “So that mankind may maintain justice” (Qur’an 57:25). The prophets came to uphold justice. Of course, upholding justice is part of the process. It’s not the ultimate goal. Therefore, the first task of the [prophets] who came was to uphold justice and save people from the evil and oppression of tyrants. Belief in Imam Mahdi (aj): One of the Most Important Tools in Fighting Colonialism
I saw a document that was from decades ago. That is, it was related to the time when colonialism had just entered Northern Africa. The countries in Northern Africa are strongly interested in the Household of the Prophet (pbut). Regardless of the Islamic denomination, they believe in, they like the Household of the Prophet (pbut). In countries like Sudan, in Maghreb, and in other countries of that region, the belief in the school of thought of Imam Mahdi (aj) is pronounced. When colonialism entered the aforementioned regions over the past century, one of the matters that troubled colonialism was the belief in Imam Mahdi (aj)! In the document I saw, the heads and commanders of colonialism suggested they needed to do something so that the belief in Imam Mahdi (aj) would gradually be removed from the people. At that time, the French and English colonizers were present in some of the African countries. No matter where the colonizers had come from, they came to this conclusion that until the belief in Imam Mahdi (aj) existed among these people, they would not be able to completely control these countries! There are a number of features in the belief in the school of thought of Imam Mahdi (aj) which work like blood in the body and soul of the material body. One of these features is hope. Sometimes, powerful, strong hands bring weak nations to the point where they completely lose hope. When they lose hope, they won’t make a move. They think that it is useless and that it is too late. They think they cannot confront the powers because they won’t succeed. This is the spirit of despair. This is what colonialism seeks. Today, the global Arrogant Powers want Muslim nations, including the dear Iranian nation, to be afflicted with the spirit of despair. Then they will say, “We cannot do anything, it is useless!” The Arrogant Powers want to inject this into the people by force. Ayatollah Khamenei Dec. 16, 1997

Imam Reza's (as) shrine, the place for communication between all Muslims The movement of the honorable children of the Imams towards Iran has a positive and meaningful dimension as well as a tragic dimension because of their martyrdom in the middle of the way to Iran. The reason for their movement towards Iran was the request of the people and their acceptance of the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household. As you know, when we speak about the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household, we mean the school of thought which was established by the Imams and the Islamic concepts which they introduced. It means a deeply cultural and spiritual achievement and a great ideological feat. This is the movement of Imam Ridha (a.s.). According to the events that you know and have heard about, Ma'mun finally feels that he has to martyr Ali ibn Musa ar-Ridha (a.s.) - he had forced that great Imam to leave Medina in order to get close to him and he did not plan to kill Imam Ridha at first - contrary to what he had planned. The divine will and plan to bury a member of the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household in this place, which was faraway from Medina, was exercised by the enemies of the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) household. Imam Khamenei: They want to busy us with one another so that they can distract our attention from the main point. They want to pit Muslim ethnicities, nations and denominations - including Shia, Sunni and other Islamic denominations - against one another so that the issue of Israel will be forgotten. The issue of occupying Palestine should have made us get close to one another. But they are using it to make us drift away from one another. They create discord in the world of Islam and pit governments against one another by using the issue of Palestine. The issue of Palestine is a clear issue. There is no Islamic denomination that has any doubts about the fact that jihad is wajib for Muslims whenever an Islamic land is under attack. All Islamic denominations share this belief and there is no ground for disagreement on this matter. However, the enemies cast doubt on this matter which all Muslims believe in. Why did Imam Hussain (pbuh) rise up? Did Imam Hussain (pbuh) rise up only for opposing a corrupt ruler like Yazid? Which were the true dimensions of Imam Hussain's movement?

Imam Khamenei:
Imam Hussain's (pbuh) movement is, indeed, perceivable via two perspectives—both of which are acceptable. Nonetheless, when put together, the two views show the extensive dimensions of this movement. One perspective involves the appearance of Imam Hussain’s action, which is a movement against a corrupt, deviated, suppressive and oppressive regime: Yazid’s Regime. But, at the heart of his action, there is a more important movement that the second perspective will lead to the move against ignorance and humiliation of mankind. In fact, even though Imam Hussain (pbuh) fights against Yazid, his extensive historical fight is not against the short-living and insignificant Yazid. Rather, his main fight is against mankind’s ignorance, abasement, deviation and humiliation. Indeed, Imam Hussain (pbuh) fights against such vices.

An ideal government was formed by Islam. If we want to summarize the story of Imam Hussain (pbuh) in a few lines, we can say: humanity suffers from ignorance, oppression and discrimination. The big rulings of the world, the empires of the Caesars and Kisras of the time—either in ancient Persia or the Roman Empire—were regimes of extravagance, non-democratic establishments, ruling through illogical coercion, ignorance and corruption. Smaller establishments--like those in the Arabian Peninsula-- were even worse than them; overall, ignorance reigned over the world. Meanwhile, the light of Islam managed to enlighten, first, the Arabian Peninsula, and then gradually grow to encompass all the world, by the Messenger of God, via Divine assistance, as well as massive and strenuous popular resistance. At the time the Prophet dies, this government was a stable establishment that could be a model for all humans throughout history. Had that establishment continued in the same direction, the history would undoubtedly change. That is, what is supposed to happen centuries later-- at the time of Imam Mahdi’s (pbuh) reappearance in the current situation—would have happened at that time. A world replete with justice, purity, truthfulness, and kindness is the world of the era of Imam Mahdi (pbuh); it is the time when the authentic life of humanity begins. The Authentic life of mankind in this world begins after the reappearance of the Imam of the Time (may God hasten his return), and humanity will achieve great development then. Thus, had the persistence of Prophet Muhammad’s establishment been made possible, and had it been formed during the early years, the history of mankind would have changed, and the final destiny of human life would have unfolded much earlier. However, this was not realized for various reasons ...

The main feature of Prophet Muhammad’s establishment was that instead of relying on oppression, it relied on justice. Instead of relying on paganism and division of human thought, it relied on monotheism and focused on worshipping God. Instead of ignorance, it relied on knowledge and wisdom. Instead of promoting revengeful behavior among the people, it relied on kindness, compassion, the establishment of friendly relations, and tolerance: a neat government both in apparent aspects and innermost aspects. One who grows under such a government becomes pious, chaste, knowledgeable, insightful, active, enthusiastic, dynamic, and moves on the path toward perfection. Fifty years after [the passing away of the prophet], everything changed. The name of Islam remained; the word ‘Islam’ persisted; however, in reality, true Islam was no longer practiced. Instead of the government of justice, a government of oppression was established again. Instead of fraternity and equality, discrimination, division and separation reigned. Instead of wisdom, ignorance ruled. During this period of fifty years, as we move on, we can find hundreds of examples of such cases; researchers are recommended to elaborate on them for the young and investigative minds. Imamate was transformed into the kingdom! The essence of Imamate is contradictory to the essence of the kingdom. These two are contradictory. Imamate is moral and spiritual leadership and compassionate and belief-related bonds with the people. Whereas, a kingdom is ruling via coercion, power and deluding, without any spiritual, compassion and belief-related bonds. The two are binary opposites. Imamate is a movement among the ummah, for the ummah and in favor of rightfulness. A kingdom is an authoritarian dominance against the interests of the people, only serving particular classes of society, to fulfill the ruling group’s hoarding wealth and pleasing lust. What we see at the time of Imam Hussain’s uprising is the second case, not the first one. That is, Yazid who was in power then, had no relations with the people; he had no knowledge, no piety, no chastity, no experience of jihad for the cause of God, and no belief in Islamic spirituality; his behavior was not a behavior of a believer in Islam, his words were not the words of a wise man. He was in no way similar to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In this situation, an opportunity arose for a person like Imam Hussain (pbuh) -- the Imam who was apt for succeeding the Prophet (pbuh)--and he rose up. Looking at the surface of the events, this uprising was against the corrupt and unpopular regime of Yazid. However, beneath the surface, it is an uprising for the sake of Islamic values, understanding, faith, and dignity. It is for the people to be set free from corruption, subordination, lowliness, and ignorance. It was for this reason that when Imam Hussain (pbuh) left Medina, in a message to his brother Muhammad Ibn Hanafiah, and in reality a message to the history, he wrote: I am not rising out of selfishness, or lust for power, nor to cause mayhem or pain. I rise looking for the correction in my grandfather's ummah. I see that things have changed in the society that the prophet left. It is going towards the wrong direction, towards corruption. It is against the direction coveted by Islam and the prophet had preached. I rise to fight against these [vices]. Imam Hussain’s fight had two dimensions and can have two different fallouts. Nonetheless, both outcomes are good. One result was that Imam Hussain (pbuh) could defeat Yazid’s government and take power away from those who oppressed the people, and devastated the fate of the people, so he could arrange things in an appropriate way. If this had happened, the route of history would have revolved. Another dimension was that, if Imam Hussain (pbuh) could not, for whatever reason, achieve political and military victory, then he would—not by words, but rather by blood, by resisting oppression, by a language that history will never forget—make his narrative flow like a perpetual and non-interruptible stream in history; this is what Imam Hussain (pbuh) did.
Of course, for those who claimed to be believers, if they had acted differently than what they did to Imam Hussain (pbuh), the first case would have happened and Imam Hussain (pbuh) could have reformed the world and the hereafter at that time! But the people did not cooperate. The discussion about why and how the people did not act appropriately, is a very long and exhausting discussion, which I elaborated to some extent some years ago under the title “the common people and the elite”-- it included who failed to act properly, who was responsible for this behavior, how they behaved, and in which areas-- I am not going to mention this discussion now. So, as a result of some people’s carelessness, the first goal was not achieved; but the second goal was accomplished. This is something that no power can take away from Imam Hussain (pbuh). The power of going to the battlefield of martyrdom; sacrificing oneself and loved ones, the grand sacrifice that is so great that no matter how big the enemy is, it will appear small and unimportant before it. This bright sun will continue to emanate more light in the Muslim world day after day till his light encompasses the whole humanity.

Today, wherever humanity has undergone some defeat, either political, military or economic, the roots of it can be traced to ignorance or abasement. That is, either they do not have the knowledge and necessary understanding, or they understand but have sold themselves cheap. They have bought into abasement and have submitted to viciousness. Imam Sajjad (pbuh) and Imam Ali (pbuh) have been narrated to have said: “Oh! Man, if your essence and existence is to be sold, it has only one price, which is the divine heaven. If you sell it to anything cheaper than heaven, you are at loss.” Even if you are offered the whole world in exchange for accepting abasement and viciousness, it is not fitting. All those who in different places around the world have surrendered to coercion and money of the wealthy and powerful, and have accepted this abasement, --whatever position they are in scholar, politician, political or social activist or intellectual-- they have failed to know their value and have sold themselves cheap. Many politicians of the world have sold themselves. Dignity is not simply represented by holding high positions like a king or a boss. Sometimes a person is sitting on a throne, bullying a thousand people boastfully. Meanwhile, he is under the coercion of another power or center. He might be a captive of his own desires and lust; but today's political captives will not reach the latter, because they are captives of major powers. April 14, 2000

The prophets save humans; so, in the Quran, one important purpose of prophethood is said to be establishing justice. “We sent Our Messengers with clear evidence (to support their truthfulness), and sent with them the Book and the Balance so that people would maintain justice {Quran; 57:25}.” In fact, the divine books and the prophets were sent in order for justice to be established in societies; that is, to remove the symbols of oppression, coercion, and corruption. The movement of Imam Hussain (pbuh) was a movement of such nature. He said: “I rose up to reform the Muslim community of my grandfather [Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)].” (Bihar Al-Anvar: V.44, P. 329) He also said: “Whoever observes a ruler legalize what God has made unlawful, violating the covenant of God, opposing the Sunnah of the Messenger of God, and treating the creatures of God sinfully and oppressively; he who does not oppose him with his speech and action, God has a right to bring him to the same fate as that of the tyrant.” (Bihar al-Anwar, v. 44, p. 381) That is if a person sees where corruption and oppression emerge from, yet they do not do anything to oppose the source of corruption and oppression, for God the Exalted, they have the same fate as the corrupt oppressor. He said that he did not rise up for the cause of wickedness, amusement, corruption or oppression. The people of Iraq invited Imam Hussain (pbuh) to rule over them, and Imam Hussain (pbuh) answered their request. So, it is not that Imam Hussain (pbuh) did not think of creating a government; he was indeed thinking of overturning tyrannical powers; either by taking the government away from them or by martyrdom ...

Imam Hussain (pbuh) knew what would his silence, his endorsement and his indifference would do to Islam if he did not take any action. When a power takes all the capacities of a community or some communities under control, and acts tyrannically, if the men of truth do not oppose him, refuting his actions, they have actually endorsed his actions. That is, oppression is endorsed by the men of truth, without them really wanting it. This was a sin committed by the elites from among the Bani-Hashem, and the children of the prominent figures of the early years of Islam. Imam Hussain, however, would not tolerate it, and hence he rose up. It is narrated that after Imam Sajjad (pbuh) returned to Medina from Karbala-- maybe ten or eleven months passed between the time this caravan left Medina and returned-- a person visited him and said: "Oh! Son of the Messenger of Allah, you see, you went and what happened?” He was right; the caravan had left while Imam Hussain (pbuh), the bright sun of Ahlulbait, so much loved by the Messenger of Allah, was among them, leading them. The daughter of Imam Ali (pbuh) had left while she was dignified and honored. The children of Imam Ali (pbuh) --Abbas and others-- the children of Imam Hassan (pbuh), prominent and talented youth of Bani Hashem had all left with this caravan. But the caravan returned with only one man -- Imam Sajjad (pbuh), with the women gone through sufferings of captivity and the loss of their loved ones. Imam Hussain (pbuh), Ali Akbar (pbuh), and even the baby were now gone. Imam Sajjad (pbuh) answered that man, stating: "Imagine what would have happened if we had not gone." Yes! If they had not gone, their bodies might have survived, but the truth would have died. The soul would have died out. Consciences would have been shattered. Logic and reason would have been condemned throughout history, and even the name of Islam would not have remained ... March 18, 2002

Why did Imam Hussain (pbuh) take his family to Karbala? Why didn't he refuse to fight with several thousand-fighter army of Yazid, in spite of having only 72 people in his army? He knew what was going to happen, yet he brought Zeinab, his wives, his children, and his brothers with him. Like the day of Mubahila, it was again a matter of clarifying the truth and promoting Islam in the real sense of the word. That shows the importance of promoting Islam. "If someone comes across a ruthless sultan who mixes up halal with haraam and breaks his promise to God, they deserve living with the sultan in the hereafter." That is to say, when someone sees such a person, they should clarify the truth through their words and actions just as Imam Hussain (pbuh) did - and he paid the price for it. One can clearly notice in his lifestyle all the methods that could have been used by a descendant of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) to preserve the great legacy of Islam which has been passed down by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and his father as well as their genuine followers. We can clearly see everything in the lifestyle of the Lord of the Martyrs (pbuh) - everything ranging from clarification to forewarning, to promotion of Islam, to provoking the conscience of prominent figures of his time during a sermon in Mina. All these things are tangible in the lifestyle of the Lord of the Martyrs (pbuh). Later on, he stood up against a great deviation and laid down his life. Imam Hussain (pbuh) was aware of the consequences of his movement. He was an infallible Imam. Infallible Imams' extensive knowledge and insight are beyond our heads. Imam Hussain (pbuh) revolted to set a role model and he refused to surrender. He asked people to help him and when a group of people from Kufa expressed their willingness to accompany him on this path, Imam Hussain (pbuh) accepted their offer and moved towards Kufa and he did not give up in the middle of the way. Imam Hussain (pbuh) stood up against the deviated current of his time, which was extremely dangerous. And this became a lesson and Imam Hussain (pbuh) himself makes the same point. That is to say, he backed up his action with the order of Islam. He said that his duty was what he was doing. He said that he had to express his opposition, no matter what the consequences were. He said, "It is good if my destiny is a victory and if my destiny is martyrdom, so much the better." This was how Imam Hussain (pbuh) acted. This was a perfect instance of self-sacrifice and it safeguarded Islam. This move preserved Islam. This move institutionalized values in society. If Imam Hussain (pbuh) had not accepted this danger, if he had not made a move, if he had not taken action, if his blood had not been shed, if those great tragedies had not happened to the shrine of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), to Imam Ali's (pbuh) daughter and to the Holy Prophet's (pbuh) descendants, this event would not have gone down in history. The event that could have prevented that great deviation had to shock people and history as much as the deviation did. This shows Imam Hussain's (pbuh) self-sacrifice. Of course, this is easier said than done. What Imam Hussain (pbuh) did was an extraordinary feat. That is to say, the dimensions of his action are far more than what we estimate. We usually ignore aspects and details. Once I spoke about Imam Hussain's (pbuh) patience. His patience was not limited to enduring thirst or seeing his companions being killed. These things are relatively easy to tolerate. The kind of patience that is difficult to practice is to listen to influential, aware and respectable people who keep creating doubts and telling you that what you are doing is dangerous and wrong. Who did those things? People like Abdullah Ja'far, Abdullah Zubair and Abdullah Abbas. These prominent figures of that time were constantly telling Imam Hussain (pbuh) not to do what he was doing. If it were somebody else, somebody who did not have that determination and stable character, he would have thought, "Well, I did my duty. These people are talking like this and the world is acting like that, so I should just say what I am supposed to say and do nothing else." A person who decides to stand up against such statements, such temptations, such doubts and such efforts to bend sharia and is not dissuaded from continuing his path - such a person is the one who can give rise to such a great transformation. In this regard, our magnanimous Imam (r.a.) was similar to the Lord of the Martyrs. I explained this in another meeting and I do not want to go into the details now. Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) is a prominent role model in history and shows the significance of a woman's presence in one of the most important events in human history. Blood gained a victory over the sword on the day of Ashura, and Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) was the cause of that victory. This was because the forces of righteousness were apparently defeated in a military fight in Karbala, but Zeinab al-Kubra's (pbuh) behavior was the factor that turned this apparent defeat into a permanent and decisive victory. That victory was due to the role she played after the day of Ashura. That is a very important point. The event proved that women are not on the periphery of history. It proved that women can have a central role in important historical events. This has been pointed out in several places in the Holy Quran as well. But Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) is a recent example and does not belong to ancient times. The story of her life is a tangible event. She played a brilliant role, making the enemies - who had apparently won the battle and slain all their opponents - feel humiliated in their own base. She branded them with permanent disgrace and turned their victory into a defeat. That was what Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) did. You can do nothing but engage in shifting allegiance, hypocrisy, flattery, self-humiliation, and empty talk. Your actions were different from your words. You became arrogant and wrongly thought that you were pious. You thought you were still revolutionary. You thought you were still the followers of the Commander of the Faithful. But the truth was something else. You were not able to deal with the fitna. You were not able to save yourselves. You ruined everything you had done before. Because of your lack of insight, your lack of knowledge of the situation, and your inability to distinguish right from wrong, you ruined everything you had built. Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) presented a deep analysis of her society's pathologies. She spoke firmly and eloquently in that difficult situation. It was not the case that she had an audience sitting in front of her and listening in silence. She was not speaking the way an orator would speak to his audience. She was surrounded by the enemies, holding spears in their hands. There were also some ordinary people there - the same people who gave up Moslem to Ibn Ziad, the same people who wrote letters to Imam Hussain and then broke their allegiance to him, the same people who hid in their homes exactly when they were supposed to stand up to Ibn Ziad. Among the people there were also some individuals who were not courageous enough to do what they should have done, and they were watching Imam Ali's daughter in tears on that day. Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) was faced with this motley and unreliable crowd, yet she spoke in a firm manner. She was an exemplary woman in history. Such women cannot be considered weak. This faithful feminine nature may reveal itself in difficult conditions. She is a role model for all great men and women in the world. She presented a deep analysis of the problems facing the revolution started by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and Imam Ali (pbuh). She said, "You could not distinguish between right and wrong in the fitna. You were unable to fulfill your duty. As a result, they severed the head of the Holy Prophet's (pbuh) grandson and put it on a spear." Zeinab (pbuh) played an unparalleled role on the way to Karbala with Imam Hussain (pbuh), on the day of Ashura with all those hardships, and after Imam Hussain (pbuh) had been martyred. It is impossible to find a similar figure in history. Later on, numerous events took place - during her captivity, in Kufa, and in Sham. Because of these great selfless efforts, Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) gained a prominent position before Allah the Exalted, and this is something that we cannot describe …

Imam Khamenei:
In the Holy Quran Allah, the Exalted mentions the names of two women as perfect examples of faith. God also mentions the names of two women as examples of infidelity. "Allah sets forth, for an example to the unbelievers, the wife of Noah and the wife of Lut: They were (respectively) under two of our righteous servants" [The Holy Quran, 66: 10]. These two women exemplify infidelity. That is to say, Allah the Exalted, mentions women, not men, as examples of both infidelity and faith. "And Allah sets forth, as an example to those who believe the wife of Pharaoh" [The Holy Quran, 66: 11]. He mentions the wife of Pharaoh and Mary as two perfect examples of faith. "And Mary the daughter of Imran" [The Holy Quran, 66: 12].
A brief comparison between Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) and the wife of Pharaoh would show the greatness of Zeinab al-Kubra's (pbuh) position. In the Holy Quran, the wife of Pharaoh has been recognized as an example of faith for both men and women until the end of time. But just compare the wife of Pharaoh - who had faith in Moses' prophethood and had been enchanted by his guidance - with Zeinab al-Kubra. When she was tortured by Pharaoh - according to narrations and historical texts, she passed away due to the torture she suffered - she was frustrated by the physical pain. She said, "O my Lord, build for me, in nearness to You, a mansion in the Garden, and save me from Pharaoh and his doings." [The Holy Quran, 66: 11] In fact, she was praying for her death: "And save me from Pharaoh and his doings." This was while her problem was only the physical torture. Unlike Zeinab al-Kubra, she had not suffered the loss of several brothers, two children, and many of her relatives and nephews. She had not watched her dear ones go to the battlefield where they were supposed to be killed. Asiah - the wife of Pharaoh - did not have to endure the psychological pains that Zeinab al-Kubra went through.
On the day of Ashura, Zeinab al-Kubra watched many of her dear ones go to the battlefield to get martyred. She watched Hussain ibn Ali (pbuh), Abbas, Ali Akbar, Qasem, her children, and other dear ones go to the battlefield. The permanence of Islam and the divine path and continuation of this path by God's servants are based on what Hussain ibn Ali (pbuh) and Zeinab al-Kubra (pbuh) did. That is to say, as a result of the great patience, resistance, and endurance of hardships, you see that religious values have gained a lot of ground in the modern world. All these human values, which are consistent with human nature in different schools of thought, are rooted in religious values. These values have been promoted by religion. What is the use of crying and mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (pbuh) after 1400 years?
"Why are you disseminating sadness, crying and tears among people?" They complain. This is not sadness and tears for the sake of sadness and tears. This is for the sake of the values. The things that lie behind the lamentation, beating the chest and the head, and shedding tears are the dearest things that one might find in the treasure trove of humanity, and they are the divine spiritual values. The Shia are trying to uphold the fact that Hussain ibn Ali (AS) is the epitome of all these values. The Shia are trying to keep their memories alive.
And if the Muslim Ummah keeps Imam Hussain's (AS) name and memory alive and follows him, it will overcome all the obstacles and hardships. And that is why all of us in the Islamic Revolution, in the Islamic Republic, from the highest to the lowest echelons including the people, the authorities, the senior officials and our honorable Imam have relied on the issue of Imam Hussain and the issue of Ashura and people's mourning. The mourning has a symbolic as well as a realistic aspect. It binds hearts together and broadens knowledge ... Jan 9, 2008

I would like to discuss a point regarding the efforts to promote Islam in the month of Muharram. Some people may question the value of the ceremonies for mourning Imam Hussain's (pbuh) martyrdom. They may say, "If you want to speak about Imam Hussain's (pbuh) movement, just go ahead and speak about his movement. Why all the crying?" This is a wrong assumption. It will be extremely hard to move ahead on this path in the absence of this emotional connection to the infallible Imams. This is why Imam Khomeini (r.a.) recommended the traditional forms of mourning. The Quranic verses about the role of the infallible Imams are interpreted in three different ways. Wilayat is one of these interpretations. "Your guardian can only be Allah - and His messenger and those who believe, who establish worship and pay charity, and bow down (in prayer)." [The Holy Quran, 5: 55] Another interpretation is submission and obedience. "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority from among you." [The Holy Quran, 4: 59] Friendship is the third interpretation. "Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives." [The Holy Quran, 42: 23] What is this friendship? People are advised to accept their Wilayat and obey them, but what is friendship for? This friendship is a kind of assurance. After the Holy Prophet (pbuh) passed away, those who ended this friendship gradually brushed aside the leadership of the infallible Imams (pbut). In the absence of this sense of friendship, the Islamic Ummah will face the same disasters. Therefore, this sense of friendship is of paramount importance, and it can be achieved through this emotional connection to the infallible Imams (pbut). Narrating the tragedies that happened to them is an attempt to establish this emotional connection. Similarly, praising their virtues [through the mourning ceremonies] is another way to form this emotional bond. Therefore, it is necessary to hold the mourning ceremonies and narrate the events of Ashura. Some people should not adopt a so-called intellectual position and reject the necessity of these mourning ceremonies. These ceremonies are necessary, and they will always be necessary. Of course, some forms of mourning are unacceptable. For instance, tatbir [a religiously prohibited ritual in which people cut their foreheads] has been declared haraam, and it must not be practiced. That is because tatbir will make the enemies more insolent and will give them an advantage over those who love the members of the Holy Prophet's household. Why is the uprising of Ashura different from all the uprisings and movements of the world? We need to read between the lines, and carefully ponder over the life story of Hussain ibn-Ali (pbuh). Many have risen up in the world; they have had a leader, and they were also killed. Among them, numerous were children of the prophets and Imams (pbut). However, Imam Hussain (pbuh) was unique. The event of Karbala was extraordinary. The martyrs of Karbala have a special position. Why? The answer is to be searched in the nature of the event, which gives a lesson to us all, including and maybe, in particular, to you, dear [disabled] war veterans. One characteristic of the event is that Imam Hussain's movement was solely and truly for the sake of God, the religion and rectifying the society of Muslims. This first feature is very important. Imam Hussain (pbuh) stated: "I did not rise up [leaving my homeland] out of self-interest, for the sake of seeking pleasure, corruption or oppression;”—that is, it was not for swaggering, selling himself, desiring something for himself, or a pretentious spectacle. There was not even a bit of oppression or corruption in this movement. “I rise up only for the sake of rectification of the nation of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah."-This is an extremely important point. The Arabic word used which means 'only' indicates that there is no other intention that can contaminate the pure intention and the sun-like mind of Imam Hussain (pbuh). When addressing the first Muslims of the early years of Islam, the Holy Quran states: "Do not be like those who marched out boastfully to show off their strength to people and hinder people from the way of God {Quran; 8:47}.” Here, Imam Hussain (pbuh) says: “I did not rise up out of self-interest or for the sake of seeking pleasure.” These are two different manners, two different behaviors. The Quran reads: "Do not be like those who marched out boastfully”, arrogantly, and selfishly. It means that this kind of behavior lacks purity of intentions. That is, in the movement of the corrupt approach, it is only self-centeredness that matters. “To show off”: This kind of person adorns himself, rides an expensive horse, wears pieces of jewelry, recites arrogant chants, and comes out. Toward where? Toward the battlefield. The battlefield is where this person and many like him will die. Such a person rises up in this manner. There is nothing but arrogance in him. This is one way [of coming out]. On the other side, the best example is Hussain Ibn Ali (AS) who is pure from any form of selfishness and is not after self-interest or personal, familial, or communitarian gains. This is the first characteristic of the movement of Hussain Ibn Ali (AS). The more selfless one is, the more value does he gain in what he does. The more one moves away from the peak of selflessness, the closer they get to the peak of selfishness, egotism, self-interest, personal and seeking familial gain and such which is a whole other spectrum. Between that pure selflessness and pure selfishness, there is a vast field. Going from one side of it to the other decreases the value of our work. It becomes less fruitful, and also less durable. This is an outcome of the matter. The more defective the product, the sooner it decays. If it is pure, it will never go bad. Giving you a physical example, a piece of 100% pure gold never decays. Nor does it rust. But the more copper, iron, and other cheaper elements are added to the alloy, the more it becomes prone to decay and destruction. This is a general rule. This applies to what is tangible. But when it comes to spirituality, these equations are far more discerning. We do not understand it because of our materialistic and ordinary vision. Nonetheless, men of vision and understanding perceive. The Critic in this matter, the Goldsmith and the Jeweler, is God the Almighty. And for sure, the Critic sees well. If there is an ounce of impurity in our work, its value would diminish accordingly, and God would reduce its lasting effect ...

God, the Exalted, is an insightful critic. The work of Imam Hussain (pbuh) is a work in which there is not even a slight hint of impurity. Hence, you see this quality achievement has lasted to this day and will last forever. Who could believe that after these people were killed in that desert far from their homes, while their bodies were buried there; with so much propaganda spread against them; all killed in such a heartless manner; their hometown of Medina was put on fire even after their martyrdom (the story of Harra, which happened the next year); -- this rose garden was devastated, and the petals of roses were all thrust, yet, later anyone would feel the aroma of the rosewater from this garden? According to which rule of nature, a petal of that rose garden can last so long in nature? However, you view the more time passes by, the more the aroma of that rose garden spreads. There are some people who do not believe that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the grandfather of Imam Hussain (pbuh) and that he follows in his path; yet, they believe in Imam Hussain (pbuh)! Some do not believe in his father, Ali (pbuh), yet, they believe in Imam Hussain (pbuh)! They do not believe in God—the God Imam Hussain worshipped, yet, before Imam Hussain (pbuh), they are humble and respectful! This is the outgrowth of Imam Hussain’s purity …

Oppressors and tyrants wanted to eliminate the event of the Husseini Ashura... but Zaynab al-Kubra (God's greetings be upon her) did not allow this to happen. Our lady - Zaynab al-Kubra - made two moves in order to do this: one was made during her capture and her transfer to Kufa and Shaam where she made illuminating and enlightening speeches. The other move was making a pilgrimage to Karbala in Arbaeen. This was either the first or second Arbaeen. This move means that we should not allow the malevolent motives which intend to erase dear, influential and important eras from memories to be successful. Of course, they will not be successful. As long as nations are alive, as long as truthful tongues speak and as long as religious hearts are motivated, they will not be able to erase these eras and events, as they have not been successful until today 
Imam Hussein; a role model for people of all ages
Jun 12, 2013 It is a glorious panorama in history which has been presented to the entire humanity. Imam Hussein (a.s.) prepared himself for such a day. Of course, the entire 50-plus-year life of Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.) is a lesson. His childhood is a lesson, his youth is a lesson, his behavior during his imamate is a lesson and his behavior after the martyrdom of Imam Hassan (a.s.) is a lesson. It was not the case that Imam Hussein's (a.s.) responsibility was confined to the last day. However, the event of Karbala enjoys such greatness and brightness that like a sun, it overshadows all the other lights. 
Why are the martyrs of Karbala the masters of the martyrs throughout history?
Jun 12, 2013 Many people were martyred in the way of God and alongside the Holy Prophet (swa), the Commander of the Faithful (as) and divine prophets But none of these events is comparable to the event of Karbala. There is a difference between a person who enters the arena with the praise and encouragement of friends and companions and with a hope of victory and who is martyred in such conditions... and a person who enters the arena in a dark and gloomy world while not only do all the great personalities of the world of Islam refuse to accompany him, but they also blame him for engaging in battle. The latter enters the arena while there is no hope of assistance from anyone... He enters the arena with a few sincere friends and with his family - including his wife, his sister, his nieces and nephews, his six-month-old son and a few young members of his family - while his friends and supporters in Kufa refuse to accompany him. This is a strange event. 
Imam Hussein (as) and his followers endured agonizing pain and suffering during Ashura
Nov 21, 2012 The pain and suffering which Imam Hussein (a.s.) and his followers endured on the day of Ashura were too agonizing and the harm which was inflicted was very serious. The life of Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.) is more valuable than everything in the world. The pure and sacred lives of those followers of Imam Hussein (a.s.), the lives of those youth and those members of Imam Hussein's (a.s.) household are not comparable to the life of other people. Their bodies were covered in blood and dirt. They made sacrifices and they laid down their lives. The households of the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) and Imam Ali (a.s.) were imprisoned. Those events are very tragic and very difficult to tolerate. But what was achieved on the day of Ashura was so great and glorious that it made it easy for Imam Hussein (a.s.), his followers and his household to endure the sufferings. This has been narrated by prominent figures.
 Imam Hussein's sacrifice prevented the deviation of Islam and the Prophet's path Nov 21, 2012 The Islamic Ummah should never forget the event of Ashura which is a lesson and a source of guidance for us. Definitely, Islam is alive because of the event of Ashura and the efforts of Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.). "And I am from Hussein." This narration means that Hussein (a.s.) continued the path of the Holy Prophet (s.w.a.) and he continued to promote Islam after him. If it had not been for the event of Ashura and if these great sacrifices had not been made in the history of Islam, this valuable experience and this practical lesson would not have been bestowed on the Islamic Ummah and Islam would have definitely deviated from its path - as many religions before Islam did - and nothing would have remained from it. The greatness of Ashura is because of this. 
Had it not been for Ashura, Islam would have gone astray like other religions Nov 21, 2012 Had it not been for Ashura, had this great sacrifice not been made in the history of Islam, had this lesson not been taught and this experience not offered, Islam would have certainly suffered from deviation like the religions before Islam had suffered from, and nothing would have remained of the truth of Islam and its luminosity. _shohadaye_karbala_zdc2.png)
Imam Hussein rose up to proclaim the word of truth and save the people Nov 27, 2011 The story didn't just end in the afternoon of Ashura; in fact, since the afternoon of Ashura, a movement started in history, which is still growing and expanding. It will be the same in the future, too. Imam Hussein (a.s.) did all in his power to proclaim the word of truth and to save the people. These are some of the traits that a person in general can see and show in the Ashura event. 
Enemy's inferiority to Lady Zeinab's powerful personality during captivity Apr 21, 2010 The greatness of Zeinab al-Kubra's (s.a.) movement is reflected in what is left of her sermons. Her unforgettable sermon in Kufa's marketplace was not just an ordinary speech. It was not just the personal opinion of an important figure. Her sermon was a great and beautifully-worded analysis of the Islamic community's situation at that time. The sermon included the most profound Islamic concepts. See how strong her character was. Her brother - her Imam and leader - had been martyred in a desert just two days before. Her dear ones, her children, and many other people had been martyred. She and tens of other women and children were taken captive on the same day. They were paraded in different places. Some of the people who were watching them were cheerful and some were shedding tears. Zeinab (s.a.) suddenly started her great mission in that critical situation.

The lady who made the blood conquer the sword Apr 21, 2010 Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) is a prominent role model in history and shows the significance of a woman's presence in one of the most important events in human history. Blood gained a victory over the sword on the day of Ashura, and Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) was the cause of that victory. This was because the forces of righteousness were apparently defeated in a military fight in Karbala, but Zeinab al-Kubra's (s.a.) behavior was the factor that turned this apparent defeat into a permanent and decisive victory. That victory was due to the role she played after the day of Ashura... But Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) is a recent example and does not belong to ancient times. The story of her life is a tangible event. She played a brilliant role, making the enemies - who had apparently won the battle and slain all their opponents - feel humiliated in their own base. She branded them with permanent disgrace and turned their victory into a defeat. 
Today the name of Hussain ibn Ali (as) shines like the sun Feb 17, 2010 On the day of Karbala, Hussain ibn Ali (a.s.) and his companions were martyred in an abandoned desert where there was not any friend and where there were many enemies. On that day, his family members were taken captive and that was over. Today, this event - which should normally have been destroyed and consigned to oblivion after 10, 15 days - is still prominent, even after the passage of many centuries. The name of Hussain ibn Ali (a.s.) is shining like the sun and it is enlightening hearts and offering guidance not only among millions of Shias and other Muslims in different Islamic countries but also among non-Muslims.

"I saw nothing but beauty": Zeinab al-Kubra (sa) Feb 8, 2010 On the day of Ashura Zeinab al-Kubra watched many of her dear ones go to the battlefield to get martyred. She watched Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.), Abbas, Ali Akbar, Qasem, her children, and other dear ones go to the battlefield. After they were martyred, she went through all those pains: The invasion of the enemy, disrespect, and the responsibility to take care of the surviving children and women. Is it possible to compare the enormity of this tragedy with physical pain? But when she was faced with these difficulties, Zeinab al-Kubra did not tell God to save her. She did not say, "O my Lord, save me." ...While the shredded body of her brother lay in front of her eyes, tells God, "O God, accept this sacrifice from us." When she was asked to describe what she had seen, she replied, "I did not see anything but beauty." All those tragedies were beautiful to Zeinab al-Kubra because they were from and for God - because they were supposed to promote the word of God.

Zeinab (s.a.) entered the heart of threats for the sake of Allah the Exalted Feb 8, 2010 What Zeinab (s.a.) did was divine. That is to say, she went into the heart of threats and hardships for the sake of Allah the Exalted. It behooves us to know and to understand our glorious [religious] history which has been a source of intellectual blessings so far and which will hopefully benefit us until the end of time. Zeinab (s.a.) played an unparalleled role on the way to Karbala with Imam Hussein (a.s.), on the day of Ashura with all those hardships, and after Imam Hussein (a.s.) had been martyred. It is impossible to find a similar figure in history. Later on, numerous events took place - during her captivity, in Kufa, and in Sham. Because of these great selfless efforts, Zeinab al-Kubra (s.a.) gained a prominent position before Allah the Exalted, and this is something that we cannot describe. 
Imam Hussein (a.s.) gave life and meaning to the day of Ashura Jan 9, 2010 All days of the year are essentially the same. It is human beings, their determination, and selfless efforts that make certain days prominent and turn them into a flag to guide other people. Ashura - the 10th of Muharram - is not in itself different from other days. It was Imam Hussein (a.s.) who gave life and meaning to that day and raised its position. It was the selfless efforts of Hussein ibn Ali's (a.s.) companions that made Ashura so important.

Why is it important to hold mourning ceremonies for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (a.s.)? Dec 27, 2009 Some people may question the value of the ceremonies for mourning Imam Hussein's (a.s.) martyrdom. They may say, "If you want to speak about Imam Hussein's (a.s.) movement, just go ahead and speak about his movement. Why all the crying?" This is a wrong assumption. It will be extremely hard to move ahead on this path in the absence of this emotional connection to the infallible Imams... This sense of friendship is of paramount importance, and it can be achieved through this emotional connection to the infallible Imams (a.s.). Narrating the tragedies that happened to them is an attempt to establish this emotional connection. Similarly, praising their virtues [through the mourning ceremonies] is another way to form this emotional bond.Therefore, it is necessary to hold the mourning ceremonies and narrate the events of Ashura. 
Mourning Ceremonies for Imam Hussein's (as) martyrdom are great opportunities to promote Islam Dec 13, 2009 Religious publicity in the month of Muharram is a case in point. The religious ceremonies for mourning Imam Hussein's (a.s.) martyrdom provide us with the best opportunity to promote Islam. We should utilize this opportunity in order to help distinguish right from wrong and create a beacon of guidance for the people. In the modern world, creating fitnas is the main technique that is used by the enemies of the truth. In such a situation, the proponents of the truth should provide the people with as much insight and clear guidance as they can so that they do not get confused.  Why did Lady Zeinab (sa) insist they go to Karbala upon returning from Shaam?
Feb 16, 2009 The late Sayyid Ibn Tawus and other luminaries have maintained that when the captives - namely, Zeinab (s.a.) and the others - entered the desert of Karbala on Arba'een, Jabir Ibn Abdullah Ansari and Atiyyah Oofi were not the only people there. Some people from the Bani Hashem tribe and some of the companions of Imam Hussein (a.s.) had gathered at his shrine to welcome Zeinab (s.a.). Maybe that was why Zeinab insisted that they go to Karbala on their return from Shaam: She wanted this small but important gathering to be formed there. Some scholars have argued that they could not have made it to Karbala by Arba'een. The late Ayatollah Ghazi has explained in detail in one of his works how it was possible for them to arrive in Karbala by Arba'een.

In order to shed light on the Truth, Imam Hussein (a.s.) took with him to the battlefields his loved ones Dec 13, 2009 Imam Hussein (a.s.) brought his dear ones to the desert of Karbala in order to clarify the truth. He knew what was going to happen, yet he brought Zeinab, his wives, his children, and his brothers with him. Like the day of Mubahila, it was again a matter of clarifying the truth and promoting Islam in the real sense of the word. That shows the importance of promoting Islam. "If someone comes across a ruthless sultan who mixes up halal with haraam and breaks his promise to God, they deserve living with the sultan in the hereafter." That is to say, when someone sees such a person, they should clarify the truth through their words and actions just as Imam Hussein (a.s.) did - and he paid the price for it. Imam Hussein brought his dear ones and his wives and children to Karbala in order to clarify the truth. 
The first revolt took place during Arba'een Feb 16, 2009 Arba'een, which took place after the Battle of Karbala, was only a start. That event marked the beginning. After the great tragedy in Karbala and the sacrifice that Imam Hussein (a.s.), his companions, and his family members made, those who were taken captive had to propagate the message of Karbala. The sermons and disclosures of Zeinab (s.a.) and Imam Sajjad (a.s.) had to act like a powerful medium and propagate the thought, goals, and positions of the martyrs of Karbala. That was what happened later on... Many people - who had listened to Zeinab (s.a.) or Imam Sajjad in Kufa and Shaam -found out a lot of things when they saw the conditions of the captives of Karbala. But they did not have enough courage or capabilities to stand up to the oppressive and arrogant government of the time and show what they had found out. Believers suppressed their feelings. Arba'een provided the first outlet for the suppressed truth and feelings. The first revolt took place on Arba'een. 
If there was no Battle of Karbala, we would be oblivious to Islam's principals today May 2, 2008 If this battle had not taken place in Karbala, we would not be aware of the principles of Islam to the extent we are today, and there was probably just a nominal trace of Islam. Not only were this great event and the holy blood of the martyrs not undermined, but they also gained more prominence in history. This is an outstanding example

Why does Ashura, in contrast to other events in history, gains more vitality over time? May 2, 2008 Some events are forgotten over time, like a weak wave created by throwing a pebble in a pool of water-- there is a wave, but as the time passes, it becomes weaker every moment and fades away in a short time. But, there are events the other way around; they do not fade away over time; rather, time makes them more prominent. One example is the event of Ashura. 
Sayeda Zeinab, Sukayna (ra), and the innocent girls and women recognized the magnitude of Ashura May 2, 2008 Everyone was wondering what had happened on the day of Ashura. The greatness of the event, the greatness of the jihad done by the Prophet's (s.w.a.) loved one and his companions was not known to anyone. Neither was the magnitude of the catastrophe in which the Holy Prophet's (s.w.a.) sons and loved ones were martyred. The majority of those who were present in that battle did not recognize the importance of this issue. And those who were fighting for the enemies were so ignorant and unaware that they did not realize what had happened. Those enchanted by arrogance, lust, and animal urges cannot understand what is happening in the human world. Of course, Sayeda Zeinab (s.a.), Sukayna (s.a.), and those innocent girls and women did recognize the magnitude of the event. This is what happened on the day of Ashura.

Imam Hussain (a.s.) can be a role model for the world’s freedom seekers and justice seekers Apr 14, 2000 Those who are not familiar with Islam but understand the concepts of freedom, justice, dignity, elevation and lofty human values, consider Imam Hussein (a.s.) as their Imam [leader] in seeking freedom, in seeking justice, in the fight against viciousness, and against ignorance and human degradation.

Imam Hussein's uprising was for the sake of God and a lesson of love and compassion May 8, 1998 It is the lessons of Ashura which always live on as eternal, and permanent debates, not confined to a specific time. The lesson we learn from Ashura is the lesson of sacrifice and religiosity, the lesson of courage, justice and the lesson of rising up for God’s cause, and the lesson of love and compassion.

The west is in search of a lost treasure whose ultimate value is hidden in Ashura May 24, 1995 One of our own Iranian thinkers had said—I heard that the person passed away— that "today the West is looking for figures like Sheikh Ansari and Mulla Sadra." Their life, spirituality and values attract western figures and western thinkers today. The source of all these treasures of truths and values is Islamic knowledge, and at the peak of this treasure of knowledge, is the knowledge of Ashura.

The Impact of Imam Hussein's Uprising on Justice and Freedom Movements Jan 26, 1993 Hussein Ibn Ali (a.s.) awakened the conscience of the people. So you see, after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (a.s.), Islamic uprisings were launched one after another. Of course, they were suppressed, but it is not important if a movement is suppressed by the enemy. It is surely bitter, but more bitter than that, is when a society does not respond to the enemy. This is a great danger. With his uprising, Imam Hussein Ibn Ali (a.s.) inspired individuals in all eras of the rule of tyrannies, to fight against oppressive and corrupt establishments with a willpower stronger than those of the time of Imam Hassan al-Mujtaba (a.s.)—even though they lived farther from the early years of Islam. And they were all suppressed. From the case of the uprising of the people of Medina, known as "Harreh", to the subsequent cases of Tawabin and Mokhtar uprisings, to the time of Umayyad and Bani Abbas, there were repeatedly uprisings within the nations. Who inspired these uprisings?If Imam Hussein (a.s.) had not risen up, would the spirit of laziness and irresponsibility change into the spirit of oppression-countering and responsibility? Why do we say the spirit of responsibility had died? Because Imam Hussein went to Mecca from Medina, the center of the nobles of Islam. The son of Abbas, the son of Zubair, the son of Omar, the son of early caliphs of Islam, all gathered in Medina, and no one of them was willing to help Imam Hussein (a.s.) in that bloody and historic uprising. So, before the launching of Imam Hussein's uprising, even the elites were not ready to take a step. But after the uprising of Imam Hussein (a.s.), this spirit was aroused. This is a great lesson to be learned from the event of Ashura, along with other lessons. 
The events of Ashura lived on thanks to Imam Sajjad and Lady Zaynab’s endeavors, explanations and revelation of reality Sep 20, 1989 If Zainab Kubra (a.s.) and Imam Sajjad (a.s.) had not fought, or revealed and interpreted the truth of Ashura's philosophy, or the purpose of Hussein ibn Ali (a.s.) and the enemy's oppression during the days of captivity--in the evening of Ashura in Karbala, in the following days en-route to Sham and Kufa, and in the city of Sham, then on the pilgrimage of Karbala, and while moving to Medina and during the many years that these great figures lived--the event of Ashura wouldn’t have survived and remained as vivacious till this day.

Imam Hussain’s uprising against corrupt regimes, destructive to mankind Aug 2, 1989 That noble man [Imam Hussein] rose up to eliminate from societies corrupt regimes that are destructive to mankind, religion and righteousness and to establish an Islamic, divine and humane and upright system in society.  The main reason Imam Hussain (as) brought Ali Asghar to the enemy’s army Sep 12, 1986 I assume the main reason Imam Hussain (as) brought Ali Asghar to the enemy’s army, to ask for water in order to nourish the infant—while there was very little hope that these lupine enemies would have sympathy and give the baby water-- was that Imam Hussain (as) had no other option and there was nothing he could do to help. When the Imam (as) moved about the tents, he noticed the air was filled with anguish and much commotion, this small infant’s thirst, hunger and distress had moved everyone. Hussain Ibn Ali (as) had to take the baby in his arms—although there was very little chance the enemy would give the baby a cup of water to sooth his thirst.

What was Hazrat Zeinab's reaction upon seeing her brother's bloodied body? Sep 27, 1985 Hazrat Zeinab was heading the women towards the sight of his martyrdom. When she arrived, she spotted the body of her beloved brother on the blistering grounds of Karbala. Instead of revealing some sort of reaction, or grievance, she went to the corpse of her beloved Hussain (as), and called on her grandfather (pbuh). She said, “O’ the Messenger of God, peace be upon you! Take a look at your Hussain who is covered in blood, with his body hacked up.” O’ my dear grandfather! O’ Great Prophet, look towards the hot desert of Karbala. This is your Hussain who is now covered in blood and dust. Then, as it has been narrated, Zeinab (as) reached her hands beneath the body of Hussain Ibn Ali (as) and called out, “O’ God! Please accept this sacrifice from the progeny of Muhammad (saw)!”
